From memory Rupe, the context was intensive fish farming in recirc. Diff species have different gut biota. Water conditions may be optimal for one species but suboptimal for others in a multi species setup. If one of those other species then becomes sick, it would ultimately affect everything in the system. I have no personal experience to back that up, it's just what we were told.

We defy a lot of this sort of science in Aquaponics and I'm not going to change my plan to have multiple tanks running off the same sump. I guess time will tell.

We have 2 major and possibly 2 minor species in our tank. Silver Perch, Jade Perch, Yellow Eel-tail catfish and Rainbowfish. They all seem fine so far.
We also seem to have tadpoles growing in the two water aging drums :D

Ditto...

Having kept large comunity aquarium fish in a large aquarium without any problems I can't see it being an issue unless your stocking quantities exceed the systems limits. You should be able to tell if you reach these through monitoring ammonia, PH NO2 and NO3 levels.

I would assume that aquaculture systems would be siling close to the wind when it comes to these limits.

Ok Kuda,

It wouldn't be a very efficient way to get fish for our systems but it should be fun. The trick will be to get the timing right. Too early and there is too much water and too late and there will be less fish.

We would also need a bunch of equipment.

Tank to transport them (i've got that)
Battery powered air pump
Nets
Siphons (got them)
anything else?

Stuart

I'm confused, are you suggesting that nasty bacteria will be spread between the fish?
Why is this not an issue in aquariums, where there are many different species?
I have had a look, and not found much helpful here, I obviously am not looking at the right threads.

Hey Kuda come to buninyong on 20th jan meet some ap,s have a yack and a look and you enjoy what you see and learn.

Chains short enough so we can't jump off? They're no fun...
How about just toss some hay in the back, probably 6-8 square bales high and we'll run around on top having fun. I mean we are going to the country ;-)

BK, you and Steve could always drive to my place, and we'll take my car? pick up F&F on the way? ;-)
