Hi Janet, price wise they are pretty much the same. There is only a few dollars difference however the dearer one has less litres per bag.

We have pretty much decided to try the Maidenwell, so will keep everyone upto date on how it works out.

Afternoon all, it was a smashingly hot day today in sunny Adelaide, felt like 42 degrees. Dont know the real temp, havent seen the news yet.

We collected our Maidenwell this afternoon and hopefully we will be able to start cycling over the next fortnight. If we cycle for the full 4 weeks this will put us in the sticky period for fish. The middle of feb will bring us to the heat being nearly over but not quiet cold enough. Any ideas on what fish we should put in?

Hi TH. Perhaps get some goldies to cycle ur system, then u get a full growout season for trout from say end March thru to just b4 chrissy. Silvers might just sit there all winter and do not much, unless u can warm the water.

Hi Rupe

the maidenwell bags are 40 lt @ $22.00, the Hydroton are 45 for $25.00, so when we worked it out they were going to cost us pretty much the same so we thought we would try something different.

The guys that sold us the Maidenwell are a Hydroponics dealer, they also mentioned that the 40lt bags will come close to covering the 50lt area.

Thanks TT, it has given us something to consider.

We had another hot one today, temp 43.

I also learnt something last night from a friend interstate who is a market gardener. For all of us who are having trouble with our Zucchini and Cucumbers not forming properly......It is not the weather or the water or a bodgee plant, the reason that they are shrivelled or/and yellowing is that they have not been fertilized.

The fruit to Zuccs and Cucumbers is already developing as part of the flower. For Zuccs you need to remove a male flower and insert it into the flower at the end of the forming zucc. Not sure about the cucumbers as I think you only need to tickle them.

Hope this helps.

What's a male flower look like? And mine a shriveling when there's only 1 flower, and the other none at all :-( perhaps I need more nutes (Tested today, 3ppm :-( ) :-| I need fish badly, my goldies can't even keep up with the wrigglers.
I have removed all my duckweed and am drying it out, in the hopes of saving more ammonia for the bacteria :-(
Anyhow this isn't my thread and I shouldn't hijack

What's a male flower look like?

Male flowers don't have an immature fruit behind the blossom.

Thanks for this, though mine was definatly heat.. the whole plant was drying out leaves and all..shadecloth is helping with the new plants.

You didn't say who the dealer was ? Is it the one on Sir Donald Bradman drive, I got my hydroton from them and was able to get them down to $22 a bag for buying in bulk (15 bags)

BTW looking forward to seeing it all up and running.

H.

Roz, you're losing your touch with that one mate... Almost stepping into my comical league ;-)

Thanks Janet.

Due to the way mine are picking up of late, I have to say it's the heat too... They even grew a bit.

Whole plant... similar but not same. pumpkin style leaf, so same family but 1 stalk with pairs of leaves off it.
Hummm just had it pointed out to me by DW, that I infact have cucumbers not zucchinis, so I really don't know what I am talking about at all in this regard on this thread :-(
My god I can be a *potty mouth* sometimes!
