Great Stuart!
I haven't seen you around here before. If you're ok for ASAP, I'll order them next week, (delivery end of January)

Ahhh F&F you're a champ.

Hey remember that little pump, the cute old one, with the paint coming off? Made of steel, call one casting (as far as I could see at a glance) ???

Do you still have it? If so please put it on hold for me.

I'd love eels, smoked eel, and fried eel cutlets are GREAT! :-)
mmmm I can almost taste it now... I wonder where dinner is...

There may be a source of eels in the future from western Victoria.

An Aboriganal group out that way relatively recently had a native title claim confirmed. Much of the evidence for the onwership of the land and the existence of native titles was the extensive of race ways and fish traps for faming the local eel population.

This claim has real potential for an aboriganal group to develop a community based business that is both able to compete economically in our economy and re establish/maintain a native way of life/ connection with their land.

I'm not sure where its at but they first have to re flood the lake and reestablish the wet land for the eels.

When they do I imagine that glasses(?thats not right, whats the eel equivilent of fingerling?) will be one of the products they will have to sell.

A young eel is an "Elver"..... can also be known as "glass eels"....

One of the major problems with trying to farm eels is counteracting the natural desire to return to sea.....

Eels can (and will) travel large distances to do so, and apparantly almost nothing stops them from escaping.

I heard the Melbourne Aquarium guide say they salted their water annually to stop migration. Confuse the eels into thinking that had gone brackish to spawn.

Are you suggesting Roz, that we'd have to do something similar just to keep them in the tank? If I just lock em in like yabbies, will they be ok? or stress about sex so bad they die?

Not really sure Kuda..... just remember seeing a couple of shows where they were farming in ponds/dams... one show in NZ and another one was I think an Aboriginal project.

Both occasions showed the eels were almost uncontainable and literally capable of and willing to slither anything up to 50km to get to the sea.

I have NEVER caught a freshwater fish in my life, and not from lack of trying. I would love to, but I'm losing faith in the ability.

I can show you a few places up my way where we will be able to catch them by hand in a few weeks.

Blackfish from the Loddon and Trout from the top of the Coliban.
