ok so the solution would be to go 20mm, but regulate the flow to a drip?
The more i think about it the greater the problem of dispersing the water over the roots seems though, i need a way to randomly alter the path the water takes.

i think stem rot could be an issue so you may need to address that.

sounds like a lot more haste then using gravel.

never know unless you try though.

You only have to wash it once timmy. Short term pain for long term gain. But don't let us put you off if you are determined to try it - as BF says, you'll never know if you don't give it a go.

I reckon that the solids clinging to the roots would result in root rot - but who knows.
