Hey Guys,

I'm about to start my first system and am in search of grow beds! After lurking in the shadows and reading as many posts as I could, I found what I think is a perfect grow bed in Les's System they are currently $130 and would suit me fine.

Problem is they're in QLD and I'm in Ballarat, Vic! I've been to all the places around town I could think of (stock places, irrigation places etc) and no one has anything similar for the same price, they do have things of similar dimensions but they have floats built in and are pricey!

I rang Tilkey this morning to see if delivery was possible, the response I got was, "do you know anyone coming up this way"... I had a quiet laugh to myself. Sure, I'll just get them to throw them in the boot and bring them home for me!

So does anyone know of anything similar available in Victoria? Size and price :)

Cheers,

Kenny.

I planned a large system a year ago and have run into similar problems, tried to get prices from a local fibreglass manufactor, and still waiting :) . I think making them with suitable form work (i.e. non-treated timber, bricks etc) and sealing with a suitable liner (or potable bitumen paint in the case of bricks) is the cheapest option. My new system planned for six months time with consist of concrete for gb's and fish tank.

Other than that for a smaller system old bath tubs are great.

I got 'the look' from the missus when I suggested putting old bath tubs in our backyard :P We had one at our old house that was going to be a grow bed (non AP), but ended up sitting there! So tubs have been banned, which is a shame as they're pretty much perfect (albeit a bit deep) and cheap cheap!

Yeah I had a look at them and my wallet literally cried :P The whole point of this IMO is to do it on the cheap :) (especially when we've just bought our first home!). I want to start with 4 beds, so $520 vs $1180... no contest, a plastic tub is a plastic tub, no matter how sexy it is :P

With you there Kenour, but sadly no Tilkey is the only manuafacturer with anything like those budget trough at anything like that price.

Treadbeard (I think) was quoted about $230 to deliver 4 of them from Brisbane to Stroud NSW (about Newcastle), so I'm figuring about $300 to me south of Sydney.

Sadly I don't think you'll get them any cheaper than $300 freight to Melbourne.

I was hoping to bring some back from Brisbane on a trailer, but wont have the time or money.

Still looking into it... might be able to do a combined order to Sydney...

Anyone else in Melbourne interested?... I'm checking out some options

welcome kenour and hold the front page. Bathtubs are perfect as growbeds and cheap and the perfect depth.
Check my Tragic Greenhouse from about page 20 on and you will see some pics. They look nice and neat, you can run plumbing underground if needed. They are a perfect startup system growbed. If you are worried about unsightly appearance, build a little brush fence around them. If they are going in a green house, who cares what they look like. You should be able to pick them up for 10-15 bucks each, and once again, they are perfect.
If u need some plumbing tips gimme a pm.
Your local tip shop will have plenty of them, they are already plumbed, and did i say they are perfect!

Hahaha, I've seen your system champ, that was the one I was showing the missus going "see, they're not THAT bad"... I still got 'the look'...

I mean you can get new tubs from B (acrylic) for $130 each! All the manufacturer have to do it make a new mold and use exactly the same amount of materials and make us the good old 2000x1000x300 tub everyone seems to be hunting for, and sell it for the same cost! (Yes, I live in a perfect world of wonderful hypotheticals!)
