hmmm well the moon is.. it is daylight here. I must do some research. I just did that because the cuttings are available. I will also plant seeds.

I go to the US for some meetings at the end of the month. I will look for some heirloom toms to plant and some tomato clips. I am hoping for big things. :)

Oh! - they will grow...and put down new roots, just that as vb said, the growth I got didn't match normal seedling, infact I planted the cuttings at the same time as the seedling toms...picking fruit off the seedlings now, pulled the cuttings out a week ago

Well, at least while they are sitting there doing nothing, they will feed on nitrates. When I need the room, I will pull them out if they aren't performing

I went out with some of the guys to dig up pumice for another system. I tried it today and I hate it. it floats and tries to get through the autsiphons and plugs it up. You have to really make the holes fine. How does anyone anchor plants in floating media. I think I will go back to lava rock or scoria

Lots and lots of rain these days. The water level in my tank is but a couple of centimeters from the top of the tank and it is raining again. the plants, are doing well except for the seedlings which are taking a beating from the rain drops. I need to figure how to make a a covering for the plants. when they were smaller, I put large clear plastic cups over the plants.. They are much too tall now.

I also need to throw in new seeds. most of my plants have played out and there is little production.

It is time to update and show some pics. This system has been in place nearly 1 year now and I am just now starting to see some impressive stuff. I made all kinds of goof ups along the way and learned alot about what not to do on future systems. My biggest problem was the location and choice of plants. I have tried to grow tomatoes in an area that really did not have enough sun. Finally I am getting some toms that are beg enough to be half way proud of. I also planted an indeterminate variety but took no care to prune them properly so I had lots of small toms and some disease problems because of airflow and too much self imposed shade. Most of that is behind me.

File comment: This grow bed is more shaded. The water goes into a bowl to provide a birdbath. It keeps the birds from walking all over the growbed in search of water. Here I have toms, passion fruit, and som silver beet.

File comment: The bed I moved into the sun is doing better than the one in more shade. I have lots of Basil, a Lemon tree, tomatoes, parsley and lettuce. The return is an NFT set up with Arugula, Silverbeet, Basil cuttings and green peppers starting to grow.

File comment: After many lessons I have learned to prune and tie up toms. Maybe too late for this one but I will know better next time.

Wow a person is gone for a few days and things really change. Going to take a little getting used to.

Anyway, I am just checking back in. I have three community systems in progress and things seem to be picking up. I am really going to need help with tomatoes though. They a good money crop but really hard to grow consistently. When I only had 5 or six plants they did fine. Now with more plants, I am getting leaf curl. I am not sure what is causing it. I haven't seen any white flies and I have been treatig for fungus. I am not sure if it is mechanical, viral, bacterial or fungus. I guess I will just keep asking questions.
