The Frequently Asked Questions section could begin compiling a FAQ of what crops up again and again for newbies. And oldies with alzheimers....

Questions are answered with some links provided to relevant threads or web resources.

When noobs ask what's already in the FAQ - we who know just point to the FAQ instead of answering the same old same old.

The FAQ could eventually contain the abridged myriad of information so many seek to find in one place.

To compile this FAQ we have a FAQ thread and everytime a typical question pops up post it there for a mods who work on the FAQ.

Soon we'll have a beginner FAQ, intermediate....

I got no problem putting in a little bit of regular time on such a thing.

Also Joel, a lot of the nuggets can be compiled for the Quarterly. Do you want articles etc for this still? Or are you too flat out. Just say no if you need to, a man can only do so much...

Sounds good to me. Happy to refer any FAQ's I see to the mods, or to post it in the FAQ section.

Has anyone considered creating a Wiki.?

Get your, who ever is hosting this, to set up say MediaWiki and have people create the entries.

You will need to look over it to make sure the info is correct but the group approach of a wiki seems to solve that problem for the most part and it can always be edited. (This editing process can be controled also, which stops vandalism)

The best example of the Wikki is:

Wikipedia.org

The concept is being used on a smaller scale by groups like this aquaponics forum.

For the record MediaWiki is:

MediaWiki

An example of a company that hosts wiki software for unsophisticated users is Wiki Hosting service.

Its not complicated to do if you are a sysadmin.

It depends on your hosting account for backyardaquaponics.com if it is a proper account, that is you can log into it via a SSH then installing a wiki is as simple as downloading the files into your webserver account and taking it from there.

If you can't log into your account using SSH or a command line then it is going to be a whole lot more difficult or impossible.

There is another way and that is to use a cheap wiki hosting account like the one I suggested, it will cost you between 4 to 10 USD per month and it will take some of the the pain out of it.

The what you could do is create a sub domain like "wiki.backyardaquaponics.com' and have it point to the wiki hosting account.

To make that work,

Create the wiki hosting account as 'wiki.backyardaquaponics.com'

Then get your domain manager, to add an 'A Record' that directs wiki.backyardaquaponics.com to the IP address of the server that actually hosts wiki.backyardaquaponics.com.

The last optioin is that I could set it up for you on my own server but the URL would look like,

http://www.widestreet.com.au/aquawiki (As an example)

I would be happy to host it for you, but the maintenance of the content will be up to you guys.

Cheers Megan

Hey Megan, I recently checked out the possibilities of setting up a wiki just a couple of days ago when you mentioned it but the guy I spoke with suggested he couldn't do it....

I might PM you and ask a couple of questions.. :)

I just returned from a conference on Fraser Island after an absence of about six days and I've got 820 new posts to wade through. Sorting the information is certainly becoming an issue for me.

How about a thread containing links to the particular posts that have useful information in them?

I know myself when I find something useful I bookmark the post (you can link the exact post using the small page icon left of the Posted: Today at ... on each post) so I can find it agian. Having specific posts is also easier than looking through an entire thread also.
