You will find Tim, that I rarely say anything that is not thought through for all nuances. Most nuances will be intentional ;-) and yes I felt OCD compulsion to sign off in 3rd person ;-)

thats what we were thinking too vb.

we were talking about organic feed and he thought that the fishmeal added to commercial feed would be considered organic, as its from the wild. he believed the other additives such as anti mold chemicals and binding agents are the reason its not organic.

isn't part of organic certification about ethical practices? i don't think harvesting large amounts of wild fish populations is really ethical as its unsustainable.

also does anyone know if they harvest wild fish purely for fish meal or do they use left over scraps from fish waste?

One of the dudes at the AP lecture organised by Geoff Wilson last year suggested that maybe we need to forget about getting organic certification and declare out food as being 'Aquaponically Grown'. Not a bad thought.

Nice Idea. Yes I was more wondering about the legalities rather than ethical or moral quandaries. 'Aquaponically Grown' sounds nice.
My AP stuff will be 100% organic, but can I say that without certification?
(I'm planning on flogging excess at the local farmer's market)

i've thought about this myself and what i would do is label it as "naturally grown, chemical free" that is of course completely untrue as chemicals are in everything. i don't feel its unethical though as i would explain what is meant by chemical free on the label. that is that it was not grown with any synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides.

i don't know if that would be legal though.

The problem is "organic" as it gets commonly applied is a wishy washy term, with no basis in what the scientific definition of the term really means.
The fact that something has been grown in a cage has no bearing on it being organic or not, it's a sympton of the health food industry and their associated groups forcing their morality into the definition, not the science.

for my money, i class something as organic as long as it has been exposed to a negligible level of synthetic compounds.

when it comes to things like AP being classed as non organic it just makes me laugh, do they really think ANYTHING is devoid of contact with some man made compound?

Timmy, I agree. Is not a paddock a big cage for cows?

KP - they won't certify AP as organic because of the processed feed - unless they are fertilising their veggies from hand shoveled cow dung, which is then taken to the farm via horse drawn cart and buggy, they are no more organic then we are.

I like the term Aquaponically Grown, however we need some recognition (and I mean every household) of what it is first so that the benefits of our produce are realised. I am doing this every day thru the farm and people coming to see our AP system, and we have a stall at the local markets too (will even have a tiny show system this week :), but it needs to happen gradually over time. The more people we all talk to about AP and the more pople who build and see systems, the better for the whole industry. Which gets me to my poinjt.

Grab the opportunity big time BF. Good things will happen for you, of that, I am 100% sure. Best of luck to you and your WA buddies over there, especially be nice to ones with landscaping equipment  :)
