TT the motor is just a stirrer the [ chilling rod ] it just a hollow pipe for the thermostat there is a cooling coil in the walls some where it runs off a separate power pack like a split system air con

Geebus FF, now you mention it, there are a couple disconnected pipes underneath. I guess that is where the cooling stuff gets connected to. Sorry Steve, I was trying to match the motor up top with the vat walls and just couldn't see it.

Guess I have to take those photos now! Is it likely to be a water/heat exchange thing or something a bit more involved?

TT, my milk vat same story. A couple of cut pipes where the refrigerant comes in/out/circulates, definately insulated and the best 450 you have spent/will spend iMHO. Nice easy tank to clean too, and I suspect it has a drain at a low point?

Yep, lhs of the first pic, Mon. Ya reckon it's big enough for 2 fm and 3m broodfish? If not i have to swap tanks and prolly bring some more on line bc 400 silver fingerlings prolly doesn't go into 1700lts, no matter how much air they get. This means the broodfish get the big tank and are happy, (but makes a lot more work for TT, who , quite frankly, has a bit on his plate atm.)

are you gonna buy in some breeders TT? I reckon it is not out of the question that we AP'ers could breed silvers/jades in our systems, 'cept they spawn into the water (what's that called?) rather than on a mop, so they would need to be kept separate from the main system obviously. I would say so long as appropriate filtration etc, no reason why it couldn't be a great holding tank.

hmmm, very jealous!

cant say i'm an expert at that sort of stuff, but i remember it from school ;)

take some pics and i'll hit the books. its definatly a refrigerant pipe , i think the milk vats used to use an 'injector'.................... prolly not an easy thing to set back up, but you never know, retrofitting and playing around can be fun, esp. during winter when i'm not busy ;)

Mon, Lindsay at KG is out on the 15th. Have spoken to him a couple times and he is in clearance mode. Silvers spawn with rising waters and temps. My big tank is not chift pist, so volume varies. They may spawn naturally this summer and i wouldn't know.

My thoughts are look after the broodfish and do the hatchery/larval rearing subject at TAFE early next year, with a view to hormone injections next summer. Provided I had a filter smaller than egg size ex tank, I should be able to hatch them once broodfish are removed.

Gives me time to bone up on plankton, hatching fry etc. Pretty loose plan atm but he is after buggerall for the broodfish and silvers are highly fecund (fertile, lotta eggs.) PM me if u want to sort something out.

Steve, thanks for your implied offer. We may be able to come to a barter arrangement for some fish! I am in the dark here engineering wise so any advice/help is welcome.

Thanks Steve. I think that work by Lake is the reference point for modern commercial finfish breeding. Will have a good read tonight.

I've been speaking with an aquaculture guy from UWA recently , he's bread silvers and many other species and he reckons that silvers are one of the more difficult ones.. I've got to try and get him on here...

What about trout? Does anybody here have any training in manual fertilisation? I forget the propper term, but massaging eggs from females then fertilising with milt retrieved from males?

It's called stripping KP.

I would be relying on industry help for the injections etc EB. It really will be a suck it and see thing if it happens. Not really looking at a commercial fry setup, but if I did it, I would want to be on top of it to minimize losses. That hatchery course early next year at Tafe should come in real handy if I happen to buy these broodfish. Still undecided.
