i was watching my fish today and noticed that one of them was flashing its silver underside. THis is mos liely because I topped up there system with tap water and accidentally left it running so it is all tap with chloramine. but none have died so if a bit of flashing is the only outcome i am not too unhappy.

my real question is what amount of salt should I put/should have put in the tank?

It is a 230L tank and I have added about 250gms of salt.
Is that too much ( i have a feeling that it is but will wait and see)

Nick 4ppt would add up to 920 grams. This is what I would recommend.

The best thing with ich is to have a big jump in salt all at once. It is probably too late but I wouldn't add that bit you have until when you add the stuff you are yet t buy.

Hi Nick, dose the tank up as stated - I had my quarantine tank previously prepared with salt before heading off to get the fish

Some of mine are flashing, this is pretty normal when put into new surroundings, as long as it doesn't become an epidemic

How have they settled in - 10 days now

I've still only ever dosed one of my systems with salt once, yet I've had no problems for years now.. Whether I've just been lucky I don't know, but I think a little flashing is not unusual under healthy conditions. Just be sure you definately have a problem to fix before jumping into the medicine cabinet (salt bag)..

I prefer to dose the fish - as a preventative/precautionary measure - as soon as I get them home. That way you are doing it in the nursery tank (much less salt needed). I don't see any downside to this and it is a practice I am always likely to follow. I guess we are conditioned by our own experiences - and up here a lot of us have scored ich on our early purchases. You do seem to have been quite lucky Joel - or perhaps the farms down there just don't have it as bad as here due to climate or something??
