so.....if next year i want to put an ibc with trout in my garage for the soul purpose of growing trout and because the garage will be kept dark and cool....it would be benficial to add an RSG filter to my biofilter?

is the RSG filter size relevant to the biofilter and the amount of water it will be processing?

hey just had a brain wave.............i remember seeing a biofilter that used bio balls of sulpher to grow (aerobic i think) de-nitrifying bacteria for nitrate removal.................. might be worth a scout on the web

BK - you have the RSG seperate to the biofilter and just have a small amount of flow going throught the RSG to maintain anaerobic conditions. I'd be inclined to run multiple RSG's if nitrate is a problem - with small flow going through each. I tested my system today for nitrate - and although it is not low by any means, I feel the RSG is helping to keep it managable. I may add another 1 or 2 RSG filters, same design as my 1st, just for the sake of proving whether it is working.

That's how we have them BK - but they don't have to be like that. They could be stand alone or in your biofilter (if the BF was an open top one that you could get too easilly). I'm sure you could do something with one of those hydro trays of yours.

BK, We've been constructing the RSGs in the growbeds because it is convenient, but there's no rule that says it has to be there.

yep........was going to try that as i wont be using the gb method of filtering because i want to keep the garage dark inside to keep the temp down for the trout

BK - only difference between a GB and a BF is the plants. Other than my beer fermenter BF - all my in shed biofilters are just a open top container full of media - just like a GB but without plants.

anyone keen on trying the sulpher method? BK?

PS - I don't think the container of gravel that Les has his RSG in has any plants.

Tis all good man - twas me who explained that badly really. Just meant that the RSG is a seperate containment to encourage anaerobic conditions - while the main part of the GB or biofilter is aerobic :-)

i think i have a 5 kg bag of sulpher stashed at some ones house.....................and another bag of charcoal somewhere else...........................could never find the potassium nitrate as a kid..............
