steve instead of the barley straw pellets, just go and get a couple of bails and use those, had a friend who had 1500 litres of green and added barley straw in one of those orange mesh thingys and it cleared it up in a couple of days. Also will provide a good substrate for other growth eg yabbies

how quickly are you trying to get rid of the algae? Tomorrow or two weeks?

Ah well, its taken us forever and a day to set this system up so two weeks is probably quite okay!!
We tried the black plastic a while ago but seemed to have gale force winds at the time!
Checked out the research on the barley straw and results seem inconclusive (is that a word), but I could give it a whirl.Seems like it will only prevent growth.
At the moment I'm down with a flu so it will be a few days before I surface anyway.

check out that last ebay auction rupert posted, its barley straw extract liquid.

Treats 20,000 litres. Id be inclined to buy that, dose it and cover it with black p[lastic at the same time.

The barley straw works by slow release hydrogen peroxide... why not just buy a container of that. I was going to reccomend copper myself, but I know how you guys feel about ingesting heavy metals an the like.
Big question is are you going to empty all the water anyway? Not sure I'd want that much algae rotting in me water. Will eat some serious oxygen.

Steve, thats what I thought as well. It is a propellant but not a flammable substance.

year 10 science teacher had been trying to get the "hydrogen pop" for 3 years worth of science classes until our class. I don't think i over stepped the mark when i asked (after class of course) why she expected hydrogen to be liberated.......and that the flare of the match was the correct result ;)

Our year 9 science teacher had been pushing on the window of the lab for 42 years (no joke this guy was *frack* near on dead he was so old) to demonstrate how glass bends. The window chose our class to demonstrate how if you push an item too far, it breaks

I remember my high school science lab had a kind of bay window style of sealed chamber with an extractor fan built into it where the teacher could put any fuming reactions/over-reactions etc....

Can't remember what the experiment was, but a few of the clowns threw in handfuls of stuff instead of spoonfuls..... stinking, choking beakers were hurriedly placed into the chamber and the fan switched to high.

Reaction continued for several minutes and resulted in the evacuation of the entire block and several students hospitalised....

Some idiot had put a bank of air-conditioning ducts for the upstairs classrooms immediately above the evac chamber
