VB popped down for a visit on friday night.

We caught 4 trout and he instruced me in the snapping of the neck method of killing them. We cleaned them in the dark ontop of the gal cover of the trout tank. they were quite feisty even after being out of the water for a bit!

anyway, i used the 4 heads in a bit of a laxa soup and baked the four fish in the oven with some garlic, pepper oregnao, basil and chilli paste rubbed inside them and then stuffed with parsley (the real stuff ;))

They are VERY bony but the bones are so thin that you can just chew any that make it into your mouth. Personally they aren't even a shadoiw of the taste that the Jade perch are, but there is nothing wrong with them, just a very mild flavour. I had full intentions of taking pics, but between the drink and eating at 11pm and reets trying to eat the soup with a tea spoon i forgot ;)

Anyway, VB will agree that its time to pull my bed down. nearly 2 years of INTENSE planting density has taken its toll, as has the poor stand construction (no feet!) which has seen the bed change its level again after the rains. I'm not getting proper drainage anymore. have removed the siphon and am letting it continuously flow until i harvest the broad beans and then i'll start again.

Soup was yummo - though probably not enough of the fish in it to impart much fish flavour. The bones in the trout wre a bit of a pain - but I wouldn't discourage people from growing them if they are the best/only choice for the climate. I didn't find that the tast was mild as such - was a pleasant taste with good firm flesh.

You guys will have to come up here for a visit sometime Steve to have a chew of my Jades and Silvers - and if ready before then, the Barra. Just leave your cigs at home - I'm still bloody coughing

Heh Jim - I'm keen to try smoking some of my jades and silvers. At first I'll give it a go in my webber - then if it works out well I may build a smoker. Any tips?

broad bean pics as promised, worms had all the pods ;)

Made a nice dish for 2 for lunch today

1 diced onion
1 finely chopped chilli
hand full of coarse ground pepper
few pinches or oregano (dried)
one pinch of basil (dried)
Two garlic cloves (pressed)
olive oil

fried all the above in a wok while boiling some rice

chucked broad beans into wok for non descript period and then added strained rice

yummo :)
