Have a read through the latest threads by Steve and VB regarding loses due to heat, lack of DO, volume of water etc...

I've not had losses directly related to any of these reasons in the transport of the fish to my place. Mine are just tiny and I believe the mortality rate to be representative of thier age and also the fact that they had only been at the fish farm for a few days and probably hadn't got over the shock of or already died from the previous move (no idea where they came from originally).

So they don't breed their own fingerlings  I always thought they did....

So just who does supply fingerlings then????

I changed my mind about the number of fish to put into the tank while I was at the hatchery and decided to buy 180 Tandanus catfish- the plan is to also have about 100 silver perch from the same source if they are available late this year.
So Greg caught "a few extra" and they were transported home in a big esky in the car. As an aside I doubt if even mid summer transport would be a problem as long as the fish are professionally bagged ie with oxygen and the right amount of water. Greg said he had shipped fish to China and the USA using the same system with no problems. Perhaps if the day was really hot a freezer brick might be a good idea but probably not needed if the car has A/C and the esky is in the boot?
Check out these lovelies- actually probably only a mother would regard catfish as lovely- they look a lot like tadpoles and they swim like tadpoles too.

A continuation of the above post. When I got my fish from the hatchery it suddenly occurred to me that they would get sucked into the pump so a hurried visit to a place which sold matting and aircon filter pads etc was made. I found this really great stuff which is apparently used to raise mattresses off surfaces in caravans etc. It is about 1cm thick and basically a bit like the old fashioned wire stuff used for beds. So I made a bag with it and stainless steel wire to act as a big screen over the pump. It is very porous so it shouldn't restrict the water flow to the pump.
The water in the fish tank is still quite cloudy but I can finally see the bottom of the tank if the light is right.

Boy- you blokes are on the ball- I haven't even finished what I was going to post and already questions. Good to see!
Fish came from Murray Cod hatchery at Gumly Gumly which is just outside Wagga. Cost was $2 each.
Very nerve wracking feeding fish when you can't see them- no idea if the food is being eaten or not. I am feeding the small sinking pellets I got from Murray once a day and a treat also once a day of chopped earthworms which I actually saw the fish eating today- Can't see them except when the pump is running- seems to make them more mobile?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc- needless to say the fact that they look happy and healthy makes them look great to me!

Steve, He doesn't have a lot left but if you are quick you would probably be OK. I are fairly sure he will ship interstate- and he reckons he will have silvers about Xmas time.
