Well the course wound up this week. At $174 for one night a week over 3 months, 2 field trips and hours working with the fish, it is a bargain. Anyone wanting some solid background knowledge would get a lot out of such a course.
We covered most subjects on a fairly general basis to get a good oversight of fish husbandry. Topics included:
Water quality, nutrition and growth, species suitability and biology, stock health, marketing, economics, stock handling, hardware (pumps etc), and i am sure i have missed some.
The inclass exchange of ideas was also very valuable.
I think Hatchery and Broodfish management and handling is on the agenda next year which sounds like fun. Check the NMIT site if you live near Melbourne. Their library is a wonderful resource too.

Think I will just stay in the system Steve, pick up one or two units each semester. They are looking at ramping up their short courses to diploma level next year. You can also enrol selectively in degree units on a full fee basis. Say if you wanted to do a specialty type subject like zooplankton for larval feed. It would be a good one to do bc all their equipment is brand new. Doing these units is around a grand each, lotsa face time with the course co-ordinators and plenty of in depth research.
