This video is a presentation on if we should act on climate change.

Unlike most, it does not look if climate change is happening, or if we are causing it, which seem to be the hiccups for most. It simply evaluates if we should act.

Worth a view (9:33 minutes)

I have for some time been a man-made climate change sceptical, but keen to see reductions in emissions partly just in case, but also due to the inevitable depletion of fossil fuels.

makes sense to me.

sort of like betting the house on a 100:1

or betting $500 on a 2:1

Assuming you MUST bet, which is also correct because an act or not act choice will be made.

never been a fan of probability maths, but it makes sense

My hunch is that in the political frenzy to "stop global warming!" the policy makers will inadvertently stomp on the accellerator instead of the brake.

one of the interesting points that i picked up on in the debate was that rudd stated a target of what 60% reduction by XX year with as yet un decided progressive targets and howard retorted with we'll decide on a target once we analyse the economics of it. Rudd countered again with we chose 60% becasue of the science. 60% is what needs to be done and we'll work around that.

that bought my vote

What an awesome argument! Well-thought-out. OK, I love Truth Tables.

and from the mouth of costello...he is basing his "term" as leader on the economics of our country......in my eyes kevin07 seems to be the better option as costello is a joke and economics wont save us and the other extreme....mr brown of the greens is based mostly environmental policies whuich wont get the country anywhere at all

ps i thought truth tables were for boolean maths and digital logic equations

OK, it's a loose analogy to a Truth Table. I like Punnett Squares in genetics, too. They all help make sure you don't miss anything. Occupational hazard, I guess.

BK,
And this is a digital logic equation.
Global Warming = 1 or =0
Action = 1 or =0
- - - - - - -Action
- - - - - - 1 - - - - 0
GW= 0 $:( - - - :)
GW= 1 $:) - -:CATASTROPHE:

tried to explain the XOR function

Alright, that link to youtube got me looking at some other interesting videos there.. This is a very interesting clip on "Arithmetic, population and energy" pointing out the total stupidity of continued growth.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F-QA2rkpBSY

Quite apt at the moment with little Johhnies continued calls of "we must continue economic growth". Mathematically, it just doesn't work...

There are actually 8 separate clips...

I have to wonder at just how he arrived at such a nice round number like 60%. i suspect he plucked it out of thin air.

One point to consider on such a drastic increase in energy costs - most people won't be able to absorbe such a high cost, which would more then likely result in poor economic conditions. during economic down turn, there will be a lot less (if any) money free to invest in things like cleaner factories. you might end up making things worse. it's an undeniable trend that countries with a better economic position have a cleaner environment.

it's very easy to talk about environmental concerns while times are good like they are now, but watch that focus disappear if times get tough.

I disagree with the idea that the economic's can't "save" us. Think of the number one limiting factor in achieving what you want in life, and the answer is usually money. If you have the money, you can solve most issues eventually.
