Logged in MSN Messenger (V7.5) tonite for the first time in a while....
Went to sign in and a message pops up saying that a "new version is available. You must install the new version in order to sign in"....
Yep... this is a kosher Microsoft message and yes you have no choice but to install the most recent version of Windows "Live" messenger if you wish to continue.... or do you???
I for one, for reasons relating to the default behaviour of files sent while off line and if for no other reason than I don't wish to be forced to load anything on my system other than what I choose. I also don't expect to have the functionality of a product I have been used denied to me if I decline to take an update...
Microsoft argues that versions prior to MSN Messenger "Live" (V8.xx) have a serious vuneralbility which could allow someone to literally take over your system. This vunerability is fixed in the "Live" version, but they couldn't be bothered fixing it for previous versions.... they'd prefer you to upgrade... fair enough.... nooooo.... they have decreed that you MUST update....
Although that's not entirely true.... wont post the link, but trust me there is a patched version addressing the vunerability...
For anyone that wishes to stay with V7.5 (haven't tested other versions)..... try this
As "Live" only runs on XP and Vista , only people using those operating systems are being forced to upgrade
Go to the
MSN Messenger folder under
Program Files and right click
msnmsgr.exe....
Select the "
Compatibility" tab.... Choose "
Run this program in compatibility mode for :".... choose "
Windows 2000"...
Click "
Apply" then "
OK" to exit....
Double click the
msnmsgr.exe file and it will give you a message saying ... "
Windows is repairing MSN Messenger".....
Sign into MSN just like you used to.....
