Hope you have a virus scanner installed DD....

The belief that there are no Mac OSX viruses is a state of self delusion, not reality.....

Are there as many viruses around in the Mac world as the Windows world?

No...... about the same ratio as actual Macs:Windows PC's.....

Oh, and from a virus writers perspective.... OSX is based on a Linux core... so there's no real kudos for writing a Mac virus anyway....

Now iPhone and Blueberry.... that'll get their pulses throbbing :D

For those that like to know where M$ and Windows is heading .....

Microsoft has created a stripped-down version of the Windows core, called MinWin, that will be at the heart of future Windows products, starting with Windows 7, the Windows client release due in 2010.

The Windows team has been working for years on reducing the dependencies in Windows which have made the operating system increasingly bloated and difficult to maintain and upgrade, it’s only been recently that the team has been able to create a separate, usuable new core.

MinWin will be at the heart of future versions of Windows Media Center, Windows Server, embedded Windows products and more.

Microsoft Distinguished Engineer Eric Traut described some of the work the Microsoft Core OS team has done to build the MinWin core.

MinWin is internal-only and “won’t be productized but it will be the basis for future products,” Traut said. But “it’s proof there is a really nice little core inside Windows.”

MinWin is 25 MB on disk; Vista is 4 GB, Traut said. (The slimmed-down Windows Server 2008 core is still 1.5 GB in size.) The MinWin kernel does not include a graphics subsystem in its current build, but does incorporate a “very simple HTTP server,” Traut said. The MinWin core is 100 files total, while all of Windows is 5,000 files in size.

Traut acknowledged tat the Windows kernel is between twelve and fifteen years old right now. He said that Microsoft is operating under the premise that “at some point, we’ll have to replace it (the kernel),” given that it “doesn’t have an unlimited life span.

Traut did not mention Singularity — Microsoft Research’s built-from-scratch microkernel-based operating system....

Singularity, is a non-Windows-based microkernel that Microsoft researchers have written from scratch as 100 percent managed code. It is being designed, from the outset, to minimize internal subsystem dependencies.

Oh and for the linux freaks...... Gutsy Gibon is so much faster than Feisty Fawn......

Just had my first look at "Gutsy Gibon"... Ubuntu 7.10....

Gutsy Gibbon isn't all that different to Feisty Fawn. It's been tweaked and is easier on the eye, but the real difference is speed.

Dt, you can actually boot it and run it from the cdrom if you want to....

For a PC .... Any Pentium or AMD Athlon

Boot from CD ....any Pentium AMD with 256Mb memory....

Installed requires 2 Gb hard drive space.... I've run it on an old Pentium 166

On a Mac .... same as above....

Can be dowloaded from www.ubuntu.com

Logged in MSN Messenger (V7.5) tonite for the first time in a while....

Went to sign in and a message pops up saying that a "new version is available. You must install the new version in order to sign in"....

Yep... this is a kosher Microsoft message and yes you have no choice but to install the most recent version of Windows "Live" messenger if you wish to continue.... or do you???

I for one, for reasons relating to the default behaviour of files sent while off line and if for no other reason than I don't wish to be forced to load anything on my system other than what I choose. I also don't expect to have the functionality of a product I have been used denied to me if I decline to take an update...

Microsoft argues that versions prior to MSN Messenger "Live" (V8.xx) have a serious vuneralbility which could allow someone to literally take over your system. This vunerability is fixed in the "Live" version, but they couldn't be bothered fixing it for previous versions.... they'd prefer you to upgrade... fair enough.... nooooo.... they have decreed that you MUST update....

Although that's not entirely true.... wont post the link, but trust me there is a patched version addressing the vunerability...

For anyone that wishes to stay with V7.5 (haven't tested other versions)..... try this

As "Live" only runs on XP and Vista , only people using those operating systems are being forced to upgrade

Go to the MSN Messenger folder under Program Files and right click msnmsgr.exe....

Select the "Compatibility" tab.... Choose "Run this program in compatibility mode for :".... choose "Windows 2000"...

Click "Apply" then "OK" to exit....

Double click the msnmsgr.exe file and it will give you a message saying ... "Windows is repairing MSN Messenger".....

Sign into MSN just like you used to..... :D

Sort clarification from Microsoft... he's what they said... in summary...

Quote:
Customers using MSN Messenger 7.0.0820 or Windows Live Messenger 8.1 are not affected by this vulnerability.....

John, you may choose to either upgrade to the latest version of Windows Live Messenger or to download MSN Messenger 7.0.

To download the latest version of MSN Messenger 7.0:
a. Start Internet Explorer.
b. Visit the following Web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

c. Click "Get it now".
d. In the File Download window, click "Save" to save the installation package to the folder of your choice.
e. Double click on this saved file when you are ready to begin installation of MSN Messenger 7.0, and then complete the wizard to install MSN Messenger 7.0.

Or adopt the method in the previous post..... or just go to "Live 8.1" if you don't care.....
