Having seen the total assault on democratic free speech last night with the "pulling" of the worm feed twice during the "Debate" there must be no doubt as to the endlessness of the length the right wing and Liberal government of this country will go to in order to totally usurp the denocratic rights and aspirations of the citixens of this country....

In another frightening example of the "future" direction some members of business and the government intend to go regarding treatment of the "average" worker and peoples of this country....

Quote:
Yesterday billionaire retailer Gerry Harvey said a "second tier" of foreign workers should be created in Australia, paid fifty percent less than local workers, undercutting local wages and conditions.

According to Mr Harvey, Mr Howard and the Liberal party are in total agreement with him. “You won't get politicians saying what I'm saying, but privately they know this sort of thing is a reality in the future."

Now big business wants to go a step further, driving down Australian employees’ wages by taking advantage of overseas workers desperate for a new life in our country.

Like Australian workers, people from overseas deserve rights at work too. One of these rights is a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.

Rope - not quite sure what the story was with pulling the worm. Why it would be a conspiracy I'm not sure - cause from what I was seeing the worm was positive everytime kev spoke and negative everytime howard spoke. I had to laugh when the worm would shoot up even before rudd openned his mouth. One tiem in particular was great commedy when rudd was bumbling at the start of his go (unusual cause he is normally fairly well spoken) yet the worm was going upward - the bloke hadn't even said anything.

I've not been paying any attention - who was controlling the worm?

The more that's said about the whole affair the muddier it seems to get....

It's not really a conspiracy VB.... there is no doubt, and the coverage tonight clearly shows, that the feed was cut by deliberate action in response to a mobile phone call to the Director at the Press Club....

Who?, why? somewaht mute point really.

Regardless, and excepting that the Press Club may have been within it's rights to cancel "its" feed over the incident I think that Channel 9 was quite within it;s rights to "dub" a worm feed into the coverage...

There seems to be all sorts of "spin" and skullduggery going on by all parties sadly....

Jezz why or why can't we just approach politics and business in this country from an ethical perspective.

VB, yep I noticed the worm shoot up before Rudd spoke as well....

I don't find a great conspiracy in that myself, because I think (as demonstrated by previous debates) that it's probably more a reflection of "perceptions" rather than a reaction to actual message content...

In that respect perhaps the "worm" was completely correct and a true indication of the audience's mood.....

That they weren't really interested in Howard as indicated by the "flat" response and only really reacted strongly when Costello was mentioned...

On the other hand perhaps the positive reaction of the worm before and/or when Rudd spoke was a reflection of "interest" and a "willingness" to listen and be engaged

pehaps rupert - but clearly not a reflection of the electorate on average, otherwise rudd would be ahead even further than he is

Never under-estimate the underlying conservative sentiment, or the power of the fundamentalist churches and organizations in Australia VB.

Nor the power and persuation of election bribes.... all $40 worth of the tax cuts..... there are a lot of people in this country that vote with there beer money or the way their parents did/do.

Who pulled the worm..... we did.....

Seems it was Parlimentary Services that pulled the worm feed the other night.

Parlimentary Services are directly responsible for the running of ALL television equipment and services within Parliment House.

Remember the debate was held within the "Great Hall" at Parliment House. Mr Howard's entire front bench were also present in the "Great Hall" during the debate including Mr Howard's "fix it" and hatchet man Tony Abbott.

Quote:

The Department of Parliamentary Services says it pulled the plug on Channel Nine's television feed for Sunday night's leaders' debate on instructions from the National Press Club.

The Nine Network complained of censorship after its broadcast was cut twice because of its controversial use of the audience response worm.

Department of Parliamentary Services secretary Hilary Penfold says she is unsure how the order to cut the feed was passed to her staff.

"Who knows where they actually were, they may well have been in the Great Hall for I know, but [it came] from someone on behalf of the Press Club," she said.

"As I say the Press Club was our client. They were the ones who were paying for the booking of the Great Hall and the broadcast services."

So now we know who did it..... but we still don't know who asked for it to be done

The true story with the worm is that John Howard did not like the idea of the worm. So channel 9 decided to run it using its own audience at a separate location and update and 'superimpose' the worm over the live feed. This is all well and good in theory as long as the feed to that studio is working correctly..

So channel 9 had to route its broadcast through another carrier, which is what disrupted the worm feed. It was either delayed or out of sink with the debate broadcast. Proof of this was when you switch over to the Digital signal and the broadcast is distorted and pixelated, as channel 9 cannot send out its regular digital signal.

Conspiracy... maybe. A couple of Howard goons on the roof messing with the satellite dishes... doubt it...

I agree that explains some of the eccenticities of the worms behaviour Tim....

But the issue of the feed being pulled is a standalone issue that raises some questions as to "who" requested that the feed be pulled... not just once but twice....

Don't think that the shadowy men in black coats are hanging around on rooftops.... well not yet anyway

In this day and age of technology there is no need to be at the scene...
so what happened to the freedom of the press and open and accountable governance!
