Hello. I have just set up a new AP system that seems to be starting off nicely. I started with water from my outdoor pond. The fish seem happy and I've noticed plant growth after just one week. I have goldfish in now and will be adding tilapia in a few months. The water in the tank is 78 degrees which, I understand, should be ok for tilapia. Is this true?

I was thinking about setting up a second system for a small number of trout. I would purchase trout from a fish farm mid state.

Has anyone here raised trout in an AP system?

Is so, what is the correct water temperature and stocking ratio for trout? Is there anything specific to the needs of trout as opposed to the needs of goldfish? I have a 200+ gallon, 2 feet deep pond outdoors that now stocks goldfish. I was thinking of bringing them in for the winter and experimenting with trout. I know trout like cooler water and thought of covering the pond with a cold frame to keep the water temp a little warmer than the open pond. Does this make any sense?

rand- the temp of 78f is that about 15c?just doing a calc it looks to high just yet!
trout need good supply of DO and standard stocking rates apply.
I would be covering from the perspective of protecting your fish from preditor activity.
There are a few APers that have raised trout in their systems, with the grow out time ending before the water temp gets to 22c.

I think that I was not clear on the water temp. The 78 degrees water temp I have in my indoor tank is water that will be for the tilapia. I converted that temp to celsius and it comes out as 26 degrees.

My outdoor water for the trout would be between 4 and 10 degrees celsius.

How would that work for trout?

To get them to grow at a good rate 10-16 is good even upto 18c.
Trout will handle 2-5c which is where they need to get to before spawning.

I am guessing brown trout but am not sure yet.

i have rainbow trout

I am able to purchase those as well. Is there an advantage to that species over another?

Can I grow them in a 200 gallon tank?

the 2 have similar tendencies and requirements.
