Well, you don't HAVE to start small with non edible fish. But Scrounging for old secondhand drums and bathtubs will reduce the costs a bit and also give you a bit of fun finding them/bartering/haggling as well. Good luck

yeah true, but it's a safer bet then slapping down $2000 on the first try. If you can scrounge large containers though go for it

if you want to start on something bigger than a small system but less than 2500l upwards, why not try an IBC or half of one and a couple of black storage boxes from the B store,

like this
http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum ... highlight=

Also I have added some pictures of what I have done with a similar type of thing. It is the bottom half of an IBC with a pump worth about $50 from age of aquarims in Browns plains, four storage containers from B for $12 each, and the tap thingy's at the front are worth from $8-12 each at hydroponic stores.

I think it is a good system as it is space conscious, reasonably attractive, they are flood and drain on loop siphons and a continually running pump.
THere are 3 decent sized barra in there and a 300W eheim heater that has kept them eating all winter. Also maybe $20 worth of gravel

Any way this is my view on the matter

Aquatom, I have purchased those grow beds you are thinking of and they are really good. I would advise you to talk directly to the manufacturer. Some of the posts above are a bit hard to follow, but I am sure you can get good information from the manufacturer.
