If this is the glenburn place when you got 400, then i have lost maybe 5, but i don't think its cause of the fish, dad has lost 1 and Emir has lost none.

Just feel a bit funny cause i don't see them FF. Have put it down to the sinking food. After a couple days, they realized they didn't have to swim to the surface for a feed. When I get thru this bag of dust, they will have to come up to get the floating pellets if they want to live! The shed window is on the north side, along with an adjacent big shady tree. I think they get a bit disconcerted by the alternate sun, clouds, branches blowing in the wind.

(Trying to think like a scared little fish here. Where is it safe? At the bottom of the tank with my buddies, and oh goody here comes my food.)

the other thing, if any do die and you don't see a floating corpse, a couple of days later you will see streaks of protein and scum on the surface instead of a whole (or chewed) body

My fish are the same - really uninteresting. They stay at the bottom as far out of sight as they can manage. I have floating food, but they don't come up for it - occasionally I can surprise them and I find one up near the surface but once I open the cover they run back down the bottom. So uninteresting.

kinda funny ya all are mentioning the fish not coming up to the surface to eat. The goldfish I have/or had always used to come to the surface even above the surface prior to my giving food to them. Then after transitioning to the basement and then removing 15 of their buddies to go fishing with the remaining three are spooked anytime I approach the tank at feeding time. Of course there is now a current to the water with the new setup. Tonight is the first time I have noticed them coming to the surface to feed again although they are still spooked by my presence. I do believe they really like the new tank and the moving water~ it is much cleaner than the old one.

One tiny concern is when i added the shellgrit to the sump, it may have buffered quicker than desirable, raising a full point over 24 hours

TT, way back I did a test on shell grit...added a handful to 10litres of tank water, it took about 3-4 days to raise the pH from 6 to 7 - don't think there is any concern in it raising too quickly

one thing i noticed with dads system today, the pump was clogged, we cleaned it up and the bypass water really started flowing again. All the shy little silvers came out and did laps though it...................
