I am only growing spuds in dirt, but in large 120 Lt flower pots, they are on my patio catching the drips from the hanging baskets above. I put about 200mm soil in the bottom, and a seed spud, then add soil as the stems grow. i'm 3/4 full now. Perhaps this could be incorporated into a system using overflow or bleeding some water off like was suggested before.
