here is a link to where i found the idea... my 2 cents to add...

do you think the preasure would affect having some goldfish in the bottom?

then its a mini aquaponic system :) could use it for fresh herbs indoors and such.

or grow one lettuce plant and play god making it grow just to eat that one plant! muahahhahahahahha (then restart the process with another lettuce plant) lol

Nice and compact, put some gravel in the top to harvest bacteria...add a RSG filter, use the same diameter tubing (1/4" :D )

Maybe have some small fish in the bottom part, then wrap it in some foam to keep the temp stable....sorry getting carried away here...........

Well... at ....

$575 for the "Classroom Kit" ... and
$899 for the "Kitchen Kit" ...

Without ... tanks, fish, plants, assembly, water etc....

Then I figure we should be able to market this one for at least $299

I think meancyote has already invented a mini system.......

'Course not everyone drinks whiskey, and it's probably not the best thing to start the kids on! lol

It does keep 'em quiet though.......

i was up all night trying to figure out a way to make a micro ap system work with an air pump instead of a water pump.... lots of people have old air pumps layin around from previous gold fish pets.

it would be neat to invent one. for them to build.

but it occured to me it wouldnt work the way i was initialy thinking.

i was hoping to have the airpump on continuously so as to not have to purchase a timer.

but that keeps preasure built up the entire time. thus not letting the water drain back into the tank.

then i was wondering if you had a 1 way valve. if you could get it to suck water into a preasure tank through use of a 1 way valve.? i'll make a drawing to show what i mean.

my logic is telling me that if you have a one way valve where im talking that it would not suck the water from the top tank into the presure tank below inorder to resend the water up into the growbed tank.

maby the easyest way to get something like this to work is to just use a air water lift? and auto siphon back down to the base.

I think this meets your needs: air pumped drip ring / gurgle pot

Air bubbles up a tube and takes water with it. The water then drips out if a ring at the top. Make it flood and drain. Heck throw in a auto syphon! No timer needed. Don't know how long the cycles would be.

Here is a better link that shows how it works

No water pump. No timers. Just air pump bottles and tubes.

There is a thread on geyser pumps which uses air to lift water...I used a small battery operated air pump (2 D-cells)...this would work for a miniature system

For a really small system like you are talking about there is no real benefit (yet piles of disadvantages) of F&D - so may as well just go with continuous flow with air lift just like the system shown by Dan.
