Bio-farmer, Why do you need to go south to go fishing?
Isn't your BYAP system up yet?

yeah i have four of my six nodes up in the greenhouse. still need to finish off the greenhouse but i have been busy setting up my next system for out the front. so many projects so little time.

one of the reasons i'm heading down is that i'm in search of the elusive fresh water cobbler from the south west. hopefully i will have a bit more luck this time. i want to see how they go in my system as they are one of my fav eating fish. reminds me a lot of eel. i may even pick up a few marron if i'm lucky. licensed of course.

Now that is a pretty good excuse. I just wish that I had thought of it myself.

Should you happen to source a couple of pairs of marron, I would be happy to maintain a breeding pair to provide diversity and to provide a location to support progeny cultivation.
ie, I would luv to EAT them, within their breeding capabilities (sustainably)

Tony

Not cheap BF... Big ones go over seas into the high priced restaurants and such. You pick them up small, but expect to pay big bucks if you want mature sizes. There is a guy up up in pickering brook: Aquatic Solutions. His name is Brett. Tell him your doing aquaponics... he might be able to help you out.

Tim C,
I looked in Yello pages, but no Aquatic Solutions listed. There is a Dunsborough Aquatic Solutions listed, but nothing in Pickering Brook.

do you have contact details?

I have also sent email to Forest Fresh Marron asking for freight prices.

10Kg is the minimum order size and I think that the smallest ones at $32/kg (10 - 14 marron/kg) would be cost effective. That amount may be too much for a 1KL sump tank, so I am offering this to others, wishing to share an order for marron.

Anyone interested?

How big is "smallest ones". What time frame are you looking at?

Here are the contact details. He doesn't keep much on site, mainly marron, trout and koi atm... He operates mostly off site.

Tony are you sure about the minimum order stated???

I made an enquiry regard a dozen (12) marron as an order and if they would provide an even split of sexes within the order....

Here's the reply I got ....

Quote:
Hi John

The male and female split is fine and they should live ok in a back yard system.

If you would like to order any marron you will have to pay up front and then they are transported to the Sydney airport for you to pick up.

The back yard system will have to have aeration or reeds and protection for the marron to hide for them to survive.

Subject: Order details?

Hi guys and gals,

If I was to order a dozen 100gm Marron would they be evenly split male/female...??

Are there any problems shipping to NSW and/or keeping them in a backyard system??

Thanks,
John

Rupe,

From http://members.westnet.com.au/wamarron/htm/prizing.html
Quote:
Size (grams) Price per kilo Approx. no. per kilo
70-100 $32.- 10-14
101-130 $34.- 8-12
131-160 $35.- 7-9
161-200 $36.- 5-6
201-250 $38.- 4-6
251-300 $39.- 4-5
301-400 $40.- 3-4
400+ $41.- 2-3

Contact us for a landed price overseas or in Australia.

Marron are freighted live (you can't get any fresher than that) in polystyrene containers in multiples of 10 kilos.
They store well in these containers for at least 7 days in cool conditions

From this, I presumed that they did not supply in orders less than 10 Kg.
I would be happier with a smaller order and will send another email to determine whether this is acceptable.

Thanks for the update.

Tony

Yeah, rechecked the website myself Tony and saw that.....

I wonder if that pricing is for restaurant trade pricing/orders?

Can you let me know when you get clarification.... maybe a call to them outling what we do and what prices they could offer....

Don't know if I could cope with 10Kg... about 140 Marron....

Anyone know what sized tank you'd need for that many?
