I wanted to start another thread for a new system that I am starting at a Drug and Alcohol rehab center. The purpose of the system is threefold.
1) Just sitting around and messing with an AP system is therapeutic.
2) To see just how much production, fish and veggies we can get out of the system, to improve the clients' diet.
3) I am ready for a new challenge.

We built this system in the middle of the compound, as an addition to an existing water storage tank that holds just over 700 gallons/ 2650 liters. The tank is about half underground and half above ground, making it nice to have an edge to sit on to watch the fish, and the grow beds are at a comfortable working height.

File comment: It doesn't look like much, but it gets better with a lot of sweat and a little imagination.

With about 30 men as clients of the center, there are plenty of people to contribute sweat equity to the project. It was fun to get them involved in all stages of the project including the budget and planning the construction.

File comment: It was hard work but the men took ownership of the project early on.

File comment: The first slab did not look too bad but we made some adjustments.

File comment: We ended up with four slabs 1 meter wide and 2.6 meters long. These will be lifted unto the tank and a knee wall as the base of the grow beds.

Once the grow beds were completed we had a gravel washing party and then we placed the gravel in the grow beds. Of course the water turned cloudy right off and several had doubts this was all going to work. They were however, intrigued by the working of the auto siphons. The next day they were amazed at how much clearer the water was. Now it was time to add some fish to cycle the water.

Everyone loves to watch the fish and are amazed to see vegetables rising out of gravel. It is really a hit.

File comment: I just added 350 fish to the system after cycling for 4 weeks. I also bought 50 plate sized fish just to let the guys know what they had to look forward to if they took care of the system. The fish at supper was a hit!

File comment: a view of the completed system Notice the 350 new fish added to the water after the water cycled. On the right is a red bucket. The night before I added the 350 new fish, one of the cycling fish gave birth to about 150 fry. We scooped these out and pu

I started with things that will grow quickly to engage their interest. I threw in some radishes to get quick greenery but I don't expect to harvest any. I pruned back my toms at the house so I stuck all the cuttings into the new system and they all took so I will have LOTS of tomatoes. I planted Green peppers, Jalapeños, Cucumbers, Basil and chives.

I still have one more bed I can put things in so I will probably just throw in a handful of seeds in the bottom of my seed bag and see what comes up.

I am volunteering as a part of what I do. I work with a local church and am in the process of building a surgical center for the people of this region. You can see what I do by going to www.loshawks.com

Can I do that here? I guess it is better to ask forgiveness rather than permission.
