Did we ever get any results with the grapes? i'd be very interested how you went as i make wine, and growing your own grapes == free wine basicly.

the vine is still growing, no flowers as yet. But then, I've never seen a grape vine flower, so I don't know what they look like. ;)

The vine stayed alive for ages, didn't seem to do much, then a couple of months ago it finally started growing

oh so it is working? how old are the vines now? you get grapes from 1 year old wood that has sprouted from 2 > year old wood, so if it's year 1 you probably won't see anything.
I'm interested because I'm pretty keen to grow my own grapes and make wine, but in normal soil you need 3m between vines, which is really limiting to what i can get out of a normal backyard.
AP lets you do some fairly intensive farming per square meter, it'd be nice if it could be a solution to my problem.
You can supply too much N to grapes, not sure if this would ever occur with AP, since your not talking about dumping loads of ammonia nitrate on your plants in a refined form.

On muscadines...

These are native to my area. I can get them in the grocery market any day of the week. I don't know the costs or regulations with shipping food, but I'd be happy to get some for any interested in paying the shipping.

Maybe if I can't ship the whole grapes, I can take out the seeds?

edit... just had a look at the usps guidelines for shipping to australia. Should be fine as long as the package doesn't leak.

What USPS says is fine to ship out of the US is not necessarily what customs here or any other country may say is acceptable.

Given the quarantine rules in place in Australia to protect our agricultural industries I doubt if it's even legal to import seeds to Australia.....

The growth of seeds and plant material being imported into this country via direct postage from places like China and other overseas countries worries the hell out of me as it totally circumvents our quarantine laws.

Sadly I reckon we'll compromise this country and end up with "foot and mouth", "mad cow disease" and all sorts of other nasties very shortly.

The list I checked was the global shipping list to Australia. So it's the US' belief of what Australia allows. Who knows, it might even be accurate :).

BTW, why is graphite banned?

USPS wrote:
Please check the lists below to verify that you are not attempting to ship something that is unacceptable for AUSTRALIA.

A commercial invoice may be required for international shipments if certain conditions are met, that may be noted below in Special Notes section. Please use USPS Commercial Invoice Form 6182 for shipments that meet specified conditions.

Unacceptable items (NI = Negotiable Instrument)
Standard USPS Prohibitions
Jewelry shipments are prohibited to Norfolk Island through Australia.
FLAMMABLE NIGHTWEAR PERSONAL EFFECTS
GRAPHITE PRODUCTS VIAGRA (COMMERCIAL)

Special Notes
All shipments to Australia must have a complete description of each commodity (formal name please, generic names i.e. machine parts, aircraft parts, clothing are not accepted) on the Commercial Invoice. The origin of the goods, quantity of each item and the value must be on the Commercial Invoice to avoid penalties.
All inbound shpts weighing equal or greater than 10 kgs (22 lbs) require Commercial Invoice.
Shipments over $120 US Dollars require a Commercial Invoice and a SUPPLIER NUMBER which is issued by Customs at the time of entry.
Documents in boxes require a Commercial Invoice.
All wood packaging entering Australia are subject to inspections by Australia Quarantine and Inspection Service and must be free of bark.
All wooden goods will experience delays and additional cost because of the mandatory inspection required by the Department of Quarantine.
Most goods imported are subject to a 10% goods and services tax on the value of the goods being shipped, plus all transportation charges.
Potpourri must be accompanied by a Phytosanitary Certificate.

Well that seems to put the kibosh in that idea. Some of the things on the list kind of imply that commercially packaged materials may be acceptable.

Maybe you can get these :)

Rup, you can inmport seeds into Aust.
I bought a heap of seeds over the net from South Africa and got them no problem. Quarantine held them for a few days and then let me have them. I think they may test them to see if its a prohibited weed or something.
