Hi all,

newbie looking to get some information. Is there a simple way to calculate the cost of running a pump. Given the voltamp , amperate and duration per day it would be running?

easy explanation:
if you run a pump rated at 85 watts for 1 hour this is 0.085 kilowatt hours
run the pump for 24 hours and you use 0.085 * 24 = 2KWh for one day
Look on your electricity bill and it states KWh rate in cents (~15c)

So to run an 85W pump for a full year would cost $55 in electricity (think that is right )

only thing is, i think most submersible pumps only run at about 60 % efficiency, so you actually use more power than the rating states. ie a 200 watt pump may use nearly 300 watts of power...

Mon, I thought the efficiency thing was that a 100W pump for example will not pump at 100W rather the converstion from electricity to water movement is not efficient, hence the remaining is converted to heat...

Or maybe we are both correct. I dunno.

With Tim on this, what is stated on the pump is the power used to run it...how that is converted to the flow rate of the pump (lph) is the efficiency

Just a thought - If a pump is rated at 200w output, could that mean a mininum of 200w, though, could rate higher?
