Steve, recently in the aquaponics business thread we talked about Omega 3 and how good it is for you. I just thought it was interesting seeing a spot on the program "What's good for you" on Monday night. Now I don't take everything this show does as gospel, but these facts seemed pretty well backed up.

Omega 3 oil takes fat from near your heart and turns it into "good fat" (as wierd as that sounds).
In another study Omega 3 oil has shown to keep your neural synapsis alive and firing, helping to reduce the chance of oldtimers sydroner (alzheimer's). It keeps you smart!
200mg or more of Omega 3 oil per day is great for you.
This translates into approx 3 servers of "oily" fish per week (Deep sea tuna, salmon).
The problem with deep sea fish is that they may have high levels of Mercury in them and therefore the WHO (World Health Organisation) reccomends no more the 3 serves of fish per week. But our Aquaponics fish are fine!!!!! Eat up guys and gals!!!

For us aquaponics nuts we need to look at the fish in our systems and how much Omega 3 oil they have per 100g of fish. Below is a list of fish and their typical Omega 3 content. However, I have also seen some research that says that aquaculture fish have a higher amount of Omega 3 oil content than wild ones.

This is taken from the Catalyst page:
Omega-3 content of typical fish (skin off) and seafood:

Canned sardines 2000mg per 100g
Atlantic salmon 1000-2000mg per 100g
Swordfish >1000mg per 100g
Whitebait 700mg per 100g
Canned tuna >600mg per 100g
Mackerel 400mg per 100g
Mullet 400mg per 100g
Bonito 400mg per 100g
Gemfish 400mg per 100g
Sardine 300mg per 100g
Tuna 300mg per 100g
Snapper 220mg per 100g
Warehou 200mg per 100g
Flounder 200mg per 100g
Blue Grenadier 175mg per 100g
Bream 150mg per 100g
Perch 150mg per 100g
Garfish 150mg per 100g
Whiting 100mg per 100g
Barramundi 100mg per 100g

Muscles 400mg per 100g
Oyster 350mg per 100g
Squid/octopus 300mg per 100g
Prawns 150mg per 100g
Lobster 100mg per 100g

(Fish skin and offal have 3 times the Omega-3 fatty acids found in the flesh.)

So to all of us in the Aquaponics world, let's give ourselves a pat on the back , sit back and realise that we are succeeding at something that's going to help us and our loved ones in the future.

It might also be a useful plug for anyone trying to convince a partner that Aquaponics is good.

As I was reading the start of the post I started to wonder "how much is there in barra and redclaw"... and lo and behold the answer did follow... Just wondering if the 'lobster' and redclaw will have the same ammounts of omega 3...

Thanks for this post Donarto, A great asset to this site (you and the info  )

I want to tell them that they got it wrong when they say that Atlantic Salmon is the highest in Omega 3..... Jade perch are way out in front of that.

If anyone can find their email address please post it to the forum, perhaps we could all email in and tell them of the better alternative, and NO Mercury probs.Jade Perch top of the list for Omega 3

Glad to hear you guys like the information :D Thanks for that info on Jade Perch Murray :!: Good work  And good work to AM for finding that e-mail address. I think this info should be something that can be used to attract people to Aquaponics (or it's products if on a commercial scale). Especially with Jade Perch being up there iwth the Omega 3 oil content!

Cheers,

Duncan.

Jade Perch, a wonderful Australian Native.
I have sent an email to CH9 - I hope many of the Forum members do so . If we all do...maybe we can get them to look at Jade Perch and correct the info on the next show.

Hey Donarto, Evidently the Omega 3 in Jade perch is pretty well distributed throughout the flesh, well, more so than other species. It is still highest in the skin etc as you so rightly point out.
Omega 3 is destroyed by exposure to oxygen and/or light, but not heat in cooking. So when cooking jade perch as whole fish, or as thick fillets, the Omega 3 that is available to the consumer of the delightful little fellow is very high.

Got another 50 Jade today, so I am very happy.

Has anyone else noticed that all the information in this show comes from the US? I mean we do have universities in Australia that could surely be used for some of "their" tests. It makes me think that they have just ripped this info off some American network and not been upfront about it.

Please don't take this as being anti-american because that is not what I am. I just think this could be a case for media watch...

VB, My 50 Jades are half in an Aquarium I purchased of eBay and the other half in my 200 ltr tank making 60 in that tank.....It is a bit overcrowed.
I need to get a decent FG Tank and some FG Grow beds from somewhere SOOOON.

Monya, I got them from Aussiefish at Gayndah or wherever they are, last of some they got out of the bottom of a pond they cleaned out in prep for the new season, may have some left..... I have lost about 9 of them though , some were DOA and others looked pretty sick and did not make it through the night....the rest of them are doing just fine.

I am pretty happy just have got some more at this time of year, even with the few losses.

Where do you think you will get your f'glass tank and grow-beds from Muzza :P .

Funny about the fish heh - despite all my problems with my last batch, not a single Jade ended up dead and only one of the big silvers died.
