Tim,

Just a warning if you source ammonia. the cloudy stuff from the supermarket is OUT, it will kill your fish. Even some of the clear stuff has surfactants that aren't listed. Be careful.

Read the useful info section on cycling.

An ammonia source is all thats required. bacteria will magically apear. If you can "seed" with bacteria then it will happen more quickly for sure, but you stiull need to have an ammonia source to feed them.

Welcome

Steve

Tim whats wrong with buying some comets? you can get a small system started with them and then when you move you will have a few plants started and ya own bacteria to start a bigger system with.

Also in a small tank you might start to get high ammonia readings rather quickly....atleast the comets will handle that, even if they dont you havent wasted alot of money on fish you will never get to eat

There is nothing stopping you getting a few smaller fish... just not eating ones for now. The small system would be ideal to learn how the nitrogen cycle worse and any mistakes you may make will happen on a smaller scale.

Don't think you get any eating fish out of it in 6 months. Shellfish take a while to grow to good eating size, unless you buy big already which sort of defeats the purpose.
