You aquaponicists sure are funny people!
The seeds I grew were broccoli, carrots, nasturtiums and snow peas and the hand is my own.

I have been taken over and now I wake up at night thinking of system layouts and wondering about drain thingies and making up names for the system components.

Have come up with new part names;
Stan pipe surround- tea light candle holder
hydroton- coco pops (you should see them float when flooded.)
Grow bed filled with hydroton- champagne cooler
Joel is catching on quick with the new lingo

How far from the top of the hydroton do you flood faye? Is there any movement in the hydroton as you flood and drain?

Not after initial flooding. The first flood still has the plug in, the hydroton absorbs the moisture and becomes saturated and the gritty bits are flushed away. After that it all floods and drains beautifully.
