for the record i have welded closed 40mm no worries by heating it and crimping it in the vice, comes out with a nice waffle pattern too ;)

but the square to round or glue in a piece sounds good too :)

timc ive seen pvc welded before and it was pressure pipe, was my understanding that the "rod" was also PVC

also if you ever stuff up a joint on pvc you can use heat to remove the offending article by cuttin down to the inner layer (haksaw) then apply heat and use needle nose pliers to peel off . it should peel off at the glue layer

when you glue correct joint on use extra solvent to ensure you get a really good seal

just another one of the handy tips ive learnt in the last year at work

Actually you have to watch using too much PVC glue/solvent. It will cause a weakening of the pipe, which with time and pressure will cause a leak. (I found that out from about twenty years of putting together PVC water lines.) Kevin

Delgrade, by all means at the correct temperature it can be done. But it can be really messy with a hot air gun. Not to mention what chemicals are exposed when it is heated in that way.

I think F&F's method is the easiest and using silicone, it doesn't take much to cut out if necessary.

Think my veiws are too simple perhaps...
I still figure the tape method, and 3 bucks for a 20mtr roll would do a few endcaps...

I use the elbows and pvc cement. Works great for me. Will post pics. I like what F&F did as well

i saw semi-flexible rubber rectangular end plugs in a hardware store on the weekend. They came in a range of sizes one of which would fit the rectangular downpipe (and seal probably without the use of sillicone or glue). Not sure on the price or food-safeness though....
