Hey All, for those other South Australians, where and how much do you get your silvers from?

The best price i have managed to find is $2 each for silver perch 3 cm in length (pick up).

Not even close to the $1 10cm (delivered) perch someone mentioned in a post somewhere interstate

Daniel, I am going to wait until Ausyfish has some. Haveyou considered jades or tandan tandna (catfish)? I would be willing to share an order with you if you want. I will be ready by the end of September.

Are jades or tandan tandna catfish omnivirous (ie will i be able to grow some of their food?)

I would be prepared to share an order (especially if it means we get them cheaper :) )

I know jades are, they love duckweed apparently. Tandna I'm not sure, will find out.

Cool, when will you be ready?

I have a day off Friday, so i reckon i could finish the system by sunday, and have all the gravel, etc in and cycling ready for the end of september

Jades are pretty agressive to other fish arent they?

How many are you gonna want Daniel? I'm gonna want about 100.

As for jades agression, I'm not sure, it wouldn't worry me , initially I will stick to one kind of fish

I believe tandanus are carnivores, probably wouldn't go for the duck weed.

Jades are omivores and devour duckweed :) I have seen no agression from the jades to the much smaler convicts. They bully eachother in pecking order style, but i think its just in fun

Ausyfish should have tandanus by december, i'm not sure when the pech are available, but i'm fairly sure they have no stock at the moment

Daniel, have you got "the book". Has all that sort of info in it. Reccommended MAXIMUM is 6 kg of finished fish per 100 litres of water IF you have twice the volume of grow beds medium to water in your tanks. Scale down from there, depending on your ratios. I have about 3500 litres, 2000 litres of grow beds, hope fully more within a short time of putting in the fish, so going on the formula, I could have maximum of say 3 kg's per hundred litres if I get another grow bed going.
Working on the assumption that I'll have a 1:1 ratio of tanks to gravel, I could have about 220 fish, if you based it on a 500 gram harvest size. So if I play it safe, halve that again and start with around 100, hopefully I won't fall flat on my face with a heap of dead fishies!

I am in the process of getting "the book"

I was going to start with 1:1 (tanks to gravel) and add more gravel as the fish grow.

Yeah, I got ya :D

Tempted to try tandana, but the fact they won't take duckweed puts me off, so going by success of murrays and steve's jades, I would like to try them. Also, I have eaten farmed Jade perch, Silvers, Barra and rainbow trout all in the same day, and IMHO, Jades were the nicest.

Yeah, i am very eager to try tandanas too..i was thinking maybe for my second lot of fish. (i think they are abit more than perch too, though couldnt find a price for them on Ausyfish)

$5 is the best price i could find, originally i was going to get broodstock from the creek and breed my own (again) but the ones i got were infested with parasites. So im going to try a different spot, with hopefully cleaner water (and no parasites)

Yeah, the last thing I want is stinkin bugs in my system. Maybe it's a good excuse to go camping in the flinders for a weekend. I used to work up at Parachilna and I know a couple of Non-national park gorges with ripper yabby spots.

Damned if I'll pay $5 for a yabby
