You use a special fish tank made on galifrey before it was destroyed in the last time war with the daleks. the fish tank would be bigger on the inside than on the outside ;)

I've got about a 1:1 ratio of fish tank to grow bed and only about 30% is out of the fish tank at low tide.

It would be gr8 if we had some hard , quantified data. Guess we are still in the infancy of AP and i am sure formal studies will be undertaken by perhaps those who have received grants and may be encouraged to further studies at tertiary level. Lotta fun for those inclined to take this seriously.

it would seem that many people getting grants go the commercial setup of biofilter / swirl separator and floating raft....................was the 2:1 ration used by S &S aquafarm?

What, didn't even get one taker with the Dr who joke? TimC? no?

Steve, I need one of those Galifrey tanks. I Love Dr. Who, and the new ones certainly have a special effects budget. No toilet-plunger-daleks now!

 TT, we do take this seriously. And we have fun doing it! But as far as quantifying displacement of grow media, that's best done using a sample of the actual media each system will use. I can get several different colors of 3/8" pea gravel here, and I can guarantee you that the % of water each would take to flood would be different. Upon examination, the yellow gravel has more variety of sizes from 3/8" down to sand. The dark gray gravel is more uniform, at 3/8". So it would take less water to flood the yellow gravel.

mmmm, ok, alittle confused...sounds like there isn't a real hard and fast rule and I would presume there are many environmental variables which would contribute to stocking densities. Is the '6kg:200ltr' ratio a tried and tested or one opinion?

another thing, what do people normally grow their fish out to (kgs?) should i establish another tank to hold fingerlings. Im thinking these could be periodically added to keep the mian system at optimum densities, do many of you guys do this?

Worms a "plate" sized fish will generally be around the 450-600gm size....

Depends how big your plate is I suppose.... :D

Sounds good, worms!

i've added a few batches of silvers and one of jades. i find the weight of each "batch" consistent to within <100g.

If the water temp permits (which it probably wont, i might move a few indoors) i want to grow out some of my trout to monster size and even put them back out next year!

sorry janet, i meant more hard science, boring research, that sorta stuff. We have anecdotal evidence from here to Mars and i am sure it is only a matter of time b4 certain things become set in stone, if they are not already. My apologies if i offended u.

Don't worry, TT. I'm not offended at all. Perhaps my written sense of humor needs some refinement. I think we are doing the pioneering research, but none of us are writing scientific papers. James Rakocy of UVI and others are writing scientific papers, I suppose.

Actually, I prefer to think of it being more in line with "the Knights who say, 'Nee, nee!'"

nee!

so I'm thinking on average the growing medium would take up around 30%-60% of the grow bed volume.

the finer growing medium the higher the %.

so correct me if I'm wrong(always assume that i am wrong)

now i am off to get some shrubbery!

DF- your correct- smaller the particulate the less water,
and the greater the biomass (good bacteria) grow surface.

Does surface porosity also have an effect upon AB activity within the grow media? Do you get greater AB activity when you use a rougher media, such as volcanic rock, than you would using a smoother media, such as pea gravel?

Huzzah!!! Another Monty Python fan!! Watch out Mikey, we might be in a battle soon with the Dr. Who fans. Of course, we can always sing either the "Spam" or the "Lumberjack" songs! I don't recall Dr. Who being into music.
