My Newcastle apricots have been flowering for 2 weeks and I hadn't even pruned the tree yet. They normally fruit in early December so it is at least 1 month early flowering.
Well, I suppose that I won't need to thin the fruit once I have pruned the tree.
I had better get onto pruning the other fruit trees very soon.

Regards,
Tony

had a climbing rose that had been let go a little too far and was threatning to strangle a lemon and a mandarine tree ... took bloody ages but i got teh vengefull sukker on the verge and the nice men came and mulched it up .. verry satifying

Well, We have lived here for just 12 months so far. We managed to get a couple of apricots, about 10 nectarines and a couple each of the white and red plums. No apples, no pears, no almonds, but a couple of buckets of olives (a few pecked olives, but the birds didn't get the taste for them).

I lost almost all of the fruit to birds. Even though I didn't spray fro fruit fly, I doubt that they got much to breed in.

This valley (where I grew up) used to be a major stone fruit source for the Perth Metro area. It was rare to have birds eating the fruit (the old 410 shotgun took care of those who ventured into the orchard)
These days, a flock of parrots descends on the orchard and the whole crop is gone in an afternoon.

I hope to be able to provide a bird net this year and spray for fruit fly so that we gain a crop of fruit to preserve.

Regards,
Tony

Organically speaking, I would try traps for fruit flies, but that might not be as practical on a large scale.
