Just watched a segment on TV about fishing for "Spiny Murray River Crayfish"....

Legal catch size of these things are 10cm.... average good size seems to be about 12-15cm

Anyone have any information on them, where they can be obtained etc

I've drooled over those beasties for years ... I'd love to keep some, but never found anywhere that I can get them from.

The only info I could find about them said that there's really no commercial trade in them, you have to catch them from the wild.
Also read some questionable references to being the second largest fresh water cray in the world, I'm pretty sure that is the Maron though..

love this quote:

"Therefore you must ensure that you have a close fitting lid, preferably with a heavy object on top of it, to keep the very strong animal in the tank. One Native Fish Australia member returned home late one night to find his very large Murray cray several hundred metres down the road happily heading off for who knows where."

Yep, one of the few pages I could find.... found a few others... I'm still looking...

The TV segment (Road to Reef - I think it was called) had some very reasonable sized crays.....like one cray would feed a person....

Marron don't gow that big do they?

Legal size and regulations..... measured from eye to back of shell before tail begins... "carapace" ....

Quote:
NSW FISHERIES REGULATIONS.

In NSW waters a A legal size hoop net has a diameter of 1.25m with a cone bag 1m deep and 13mm minimum mesh size. A limit of 5 nets per person applies and your name and address must be on a tag attached to each net.

There is a size limit of 9cm measured from the rear of the eye socket to the back of the carapace or head, and a bag limit of 5 per person per day with a possession limit of 10 applies. Only one Murray crayfish can exceed 12 cm in length.

Murray crayfish may only be taken during the months of May, June, July and August in NSW waters. It is illegal to take Murray crayfish from notified trout waters by any method.

It is also illegal to keep any female crayfish in berry (eggs attached under the tail). They must be returned immediately to the water. Certain areas are closed to the use of hoop nets.
