should have measured his pond temp, didn't even think of doing that, assumed it would be the same temp as mine, 10C

Thanks Jaymie, I'll practice my speed reading.

I'm pleased people are enjoying them, it sounds like their table manners would fit right in with my goldies. I think they'ed eat till they pop!

Those fishies are BIG for $2! Thought they would be little fish. It would have been very 'cosie' with 60 of them in the tank I had in mind! I've got to get a proper grow out tank!

I spoke to Frank at the Ballarat Hatchery this week. He has nuthin left basically. Reckons he will have babies for sale in 3 weeks or so, 20cents each. I am thinking of using them for my new system.

With the tank in the garage, water temp should be stable and i may get them to plate size b4 the water gets too hot. Watchya think Troutman.? I am in Geelong, the shed has a big shady tree above it. My tank will be 6500lts. Reckon 200 would be no worries. Can i expect much thermal conductivity from my growbeds, raising water temps too high? Pretty keen to give them a fly and 200 at 20c each is only 40 bucks.

Bugger, Steve.
We need a fish with the fcr of trout and a temp preference b/n trout and jades. Any ideas anyone? Is there any hard data on flow rate/ temp conductivity b/n gbs and fishtank? Any standard rules etc?
I have no probs throwing ice blocks in as i already have a freezer under utilized. I really don't want to put heating in my fishtank, so barra and perhaps even jades may be out. Silvers are hardy they may be fine. Start my aquaculture course this week and should have a much better handle on things in the near future.
For my region, trout and murray cod are easily sellable. From a temp point of view they are prolly not compatible. (Tragic sighs, goes back to drawing board and dreams of life where fish are fat, lettuce is green and the living is eeeeeasy.)

BK, nah mate, self employed. Geelong has come a long way since the Pyramid collapse 20 years ago. Diversified economy, heavy tourism growth, mucho infrastructure, and by the way, have a look at the AFL ladder. Love my town atm and the Ford hiccup is just dat, a hiccup.

reckon u r right C1. I am pro trout for a bunch of reasons. Even if i got em Sept 1 still perhaps got time to get em to the table b4 chrissy and too high water temps. Failing that, need to get my plant growth up, (should be no probs,) to shade my gb rocks and alleviate water temps as much as possible. Got a local market for them so will prolly sell most.

TT, bit of designing could minimize the heat gain.

If i wanted to decrease heat gain on my system i would (AND WILL ;))

Shadecloth / silver insulation foil around outside of bath to minimise solar heating of bath and silve foil around supply / return pipes.

Wold probably do the trick. Give a go mate, just have a few blocks of ice on stand-by

How big are the fingerlings yr looking at?
and cost?
did you say 20c?

We froze 2 ltr cordial bottles(25)lasted 10 mins @ 40c
pond temp near 20, when the daily temp got up there.
tried to keep the temp at 16-18c,
DO is an issue that wont go away. and cooling can be done via coolgardie safe. arrangement of hessian with water flowing over it.(google)

Gnash06's thread has some figures in it from when he first trialled a similar idea
