Here in aus if you dont have a crash your premiums are very cheap when you crash instead of putting up premiums you pay the first $400 or $500

I'm glad no one was hurt.

I have a question, or should I say questions...

What is the best way to transfer the direction of motion? If I have a vertical shaft turning and I want it to turn a horizontal shaft, what's the best way to do it?

And is there a cost effective way to do it?

And what about materials? I'm concerned using galv steel pipes because of the potential for poisoning the water, I've been told that crayfish are extremely sensitive to metals in the water.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Jaymie,
On the Geyser Pump thread, you posted a pic of a shaft with an old plastic fan blade on it. May I ask what was mounted to the other end of the shaft? And what type of gear are you using to transfer the motion? Can I see a couple pics of the mounting of the fan and the other end?

Of course, a large, slow moving axial flow pump will be more efficient still. Perhaps take an old exhaust fan and remove the plastic blades from the motor and put them on a long metal rod and turn that with a 1W low voltage DC geared motor such as you can buy at d*ck sm*th. (Remember, we want slow)

This is an alternate version, not related to venturi's or water pumping, but to aeration. We've finally got a prototype going of the windpowered aerator. We'll probably change the fan blade over to an old industrial aircon fan (bigger, better blade shape etc)

The photo also shows the auto-maggot-feeder.

I'm personally thinking about making a single level Savonious Wind turbine made from a blue plastic barrel. Like these...

I'm not sure what type of a fan or fish finger maker I'll use in the tank...
But I'm not sure what to use for the materials for the shaft and gear that wouldn't introduce metals to the water.

Rass, what you see is what you get with that fan blade. The idea was to have the wind blow across the blade and just stir the water a bit. It didn't work too well because the tide would go out and the fan wouldn't contact the water. I think the bolt holding the fan blade on also rusted onto the fan and it didn't turn too well.
It has since been removed.

Another idea we have is for a fan of some description to be above the roof of the greenhouse and to drive a small bellows pump that is in or near the water to provide aeration. One problem with this is that my FIL nicely bought us a bellows type pump and then put it in a safe place... I wish we knew where that was :?

stainless steel is always a good choice.

Ah, ok Jaymie. So it was loosely mounted and not driven by anything. hmmm, I'm definitely looking to do a similar design but an air driven mechanical aerator. An air driven version of the 'paddle wheels' that are used so often in pond aeration.

Yeah, Titanium or Stelite J are grand too... but not always readily available or all that affordable! lol

I'm thinking about going with galvanized pipe and then using either acrylic or epoxy boat bottom paint to coat all the parts. I'm also thinking of having the drive shaft actually be off to the side of the main crayfish tank and using a 90* 1:1 gear. I just haven't found an affordable one yet. Just missed one on ebay today.

I'm not planning on this aerator being the primary system, but instead a redundant part of the system for Murphy's sake.
