The 300Gb drives SATA Steve......??

Picking they may be and the original 80Gb will be an IDE...

Check your controller properties....

OPen device manager... Click "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers"... click on primary IDE channel, then right click and select properties.....

Check advanced settings.... the transfer mode should be set to "DMA if available" ....

In the window below it should say what mode it is running.... it should be Ultra DMA Mode 5 or similar.....

If its running in PIO mode (quite possible if you unstalled the system with the 80GB IDE drive) then you'll run like a slug.

You may have to re-install your IDE drivers to enable DMA mode, or you may be able to select it and reboot.....

Also check and update your bios if it's more than 12 months old....

Most onboard controllers weren't designed to handle 300Gb + drives.

Older style CD drives, CDRW. DVD or even DVDRW drives often defaulted to PIO mode... hence the previous warning....

If it's all too difficult try installing the 300Gb as a Secondary master in DMA mode and move the other DVD/CD drives to slaves.

Caution.... mkost DVDRW drives prefer to be set as Secondary masters and choke if in PIO mode..... so don't move your writer to where your 300Gb was or you'll just trade one problem for another...

Oh.... and make sure you are using genuine sheilded 80-wire cables....

Often Ultra DMA mode wont work otherwise.

I installed two of the WD 320's a while back and I did notice a decrease in performance. I put it down to my power supply, seen as though I have 4 320GB drives, and a power hungry CPU and GFX card.

I have yet to upgrade my PSU to see if it fixed the problem.

I thought PSU's either work or don't work - if they don't work your system either crashes or won't start up at all, as opposed to a system slowing down?

Rupe, nope, its IDE..................running in full UDMA

Bios more than 12 months old? LOL, i'm running a 1.49Ghz athalon! whadda ya recon?

Thanx for all the troubles guys, i was gone for a while becasue my PC hemorrhaged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Took a few screen shots.........

cpu alternating upto 100% yet nothing using that much on the process list, plus the system idle process seems to be missing................

Then the net dropped out....................

re-started and noticed that the firewall was turned off.

re started and notices that avg was turned off.

re started and watched the process list, multile instances of control.exe (control panel ) and rundll32.....................ahhhhh huh.

full scan.................multiple trojans, back doors, all probably coming form the not-a-virus exploit infection on a java componet???

I have only got a virus infection of a very few occasions. I have one question. How do you get an infection with an uptodate definition and auto protect on unless its a new threat??????

Steve, how come 20 processes are missing from the processes list? I hope that HDD didn't bring in some sort of virus that uses your computer as a bot, because those things tend to hide themselves and use your computer (hence the 100% CPU). If your ISP finds out, they might cut off your internet!

buggered if i know, it was a brand new WD sealed in antistatic and the first thing i did was initialise it (there were no partitions) and format it ntfs so i don't think so.

isps can be very forgiving, i got 8 copyright infringement warnings from baytsp and i'm still on  ;)

just waiting for the scan to finish and clean the infections then i'll run another complete one on the "detailed" setting overnight.

i did get some pop up alerts today warning of suspiciosu activity and infections via auto protect, but i quarantined and denied access respectively.

Oh well, at least my system is running nice again.

Its amazing how quick even a 1.5ghz athalon with 512 ram can run if you're not into gaming ;) video conversions take far too long though. my solution was a dvd player that played DivX / Xvid ;)

What made you think that turning off the "AV" would make your file transfer faster??......

man, just buy the drive an an external usb case!

$98 for the 320G hdd and about $30 i think for the external case. job done.

Bit the bullet and have purchased a Seagate 320GB hard drive ($99) and a CoolMaster HCraft external hard drive enclosure (with USB2 hub). This was $47 Steve. There was one for $25 or something, but bloke said it may run a bit hot if leaving on for more than a couple of hours.

Anyway - told the guy why I was getting it and he asked me if I had set one up before. Told me I'd need to know what I was doing. I read him what you had said Steve about how to set it up and he laughed. Anyway - told him you would walk me through how to format it and change settings and shit so that the computer recognises it ;-). Will get onto you when I get back from my little work trip

i don't like laughing boys. if you have formatting it is a piece of piss. Will be interested to see if it takes you any longer than what i predicted.

On my pc...........................i've updated av, and done multiple scans, no more viruses, but the cpu usage does that funny thing, but ONLY when i plug in my network cable (for broad band) and i notice that the two processes that are taking up power when it peaks are the AV and services.exe

Cuopled with really strange entries in the security log fie to do with failed logins and stuff like that, i do not have a huge amount of confidence...........bugger it, i'm gonna wipe and start fresh just in case, i do shite loads of on-line money things.

Kill your "Skype" process... exit it on the tray icon... then have a look at things....
