So ya reckon I'd be able to whack that together myself. Where do you get your cheap 320GB one from and can I be guaranteed that it will *now Paul, stop that* with my system as much as yours

Or buy youself a 300Gb hard disk and whack it into one of these....

Can still use it as an external hard drive/backup drive if you want.....

Just take it with you as a media player .....

Especially with laptops, I really recommend having some warranty. PC's are easier to fix yourself as they're very modular and you can get parts everywhere, but laptops are more difficult.

Thanks Steve - might do that. Though you didn't answer my question about the thing slowing down your computer inexplicably. Am I likely to end up cursing you if I get one - or will it be different cos it is externally mounted?

To be fair.... you will markedly improve performance of the WD drive if you "jumper" it directly.... i.e don't select "cable select" and if you use the WD application tools to lowlevel format and install the drive....

Also be wary of attaching the drive as a slave on the secondary channel, especially as a slave to a DVD or more importantly DVDRW drive......

That was with IDE, right? Or can you still do that with SATA? Thought most DVD drives were still IDE..

believe it or not now th4e system seems faster.............. will report back in a few days.

I'm aware of the speed limitations when transferring data between a master and slave on the same channel.

tell me more about the CS setting. does it bog it down over manually selecting master or slave?

Thjing is what my bro was talking about (and me until a few minutes ago) was just general pc running speed, not while transferring files or burning.

i believe the 320g is a slave on the primary channel (and the system 80gb is the master)

I initialiesed the disk from the logical disk manager in xp and did a quick ntfs format.

What i'm getting at is that there is no reason that a new idle drive (not system drive) would bog down general system operation, is there?
