I'm assuming the pump is mounted out of the water and is pumping up to a header tank of some sort. Am I on the right track?

it is water tight to the bowl down to the black part at the bottom that sucks in the water. the impeller is at a few inches below surface water level. water level inside and outside the bowl is the same, but it takes in water from the bottom. if the tank level falls so will the bowl level. if it drops a few inches, the impeller will not be in the water.

that is the motor, the pump is in the bowl. the motor is not in the water, it is driven by a shaft.

Interesting MC, I'm keen to see some pictures of it in the tank, and trying to figure out how it works...
