Vista had the codename Longhorn before it was released, and Server 2008 had the codename Longhorn Server (to be released later this year).

If you're planning on buying Vista, wait at least till November (that's when the first servicepack will have come out).

I'll let in run for a couple of days and see if anyone knows......

Hint : Had a purely graphical intereface.... remnants of the code still exist to this day in Win95/98/ME/XP and Office

Remember ... this program was made before Windows 95 was released...

Does the "Start" menu look hauntingly familiar ......

This isn't necessarily the place I would have thought of asking this question, but maybe some of you would know. Has anyone set up any companies/sites for supporting the programs abandoned by MicroSoft?

Think about it, while MS holds the copyright to the original programming, they have ceased to maintain customer/user support on many of thier older programs. So, IMHO, if an enterprising person or company wanted to go into making revisions to and providing support of older programs that MS has abandoned then they face minimumal obstacles in the courts from MS as MS is no longer interested in taking care of these older products. (Much like the problem with antique cars and the original manufacturers. You can't walk into a Ford dealership and get a water pump for a model T, but they are more than happy to let you show it off at thier lot.)

That took a LOT of searching. I have seen it before in an article but couldn't seem to find it anywhere.

One of Micro$ofts bigger failures....

To clear up codenames......

Longhorn = Vista
Longhorn Server = MS Windows Server 200? Whenever it is completed.

Novell just released a beta client for Vista so we gave it another crack at work on one of our computers.... I don't know why we bothered, put it that way. Activation + firewall = 3 hours trying to contact MS. Plus windows update doesn't work there either, but Mac update does... Hmmmm! Plus those "Are your sure you wish to..." messages drive you insane.

The answer to the mystery MS op system is.......... Microsoft Bob.....

I kid you not.... actually trained my kids on it, they loved it  ..... was actually picked up by Gateway for a while.

Bob featured a selection of guides which represented an early form of the cartoon "Helpers" of "Office Assistant" and "Microsoft Agent" technologies..

Legacy code still exists in products today, particularly the cartoon "Helpers".... like...

Bob's face is used in MSN Messenger as a "Nerd" smilie, Will and Dot are now Office Assistants (Will was only used in Office 97)
Rover the yellow dog is the search assistant in XP, Rover's animations inspired the Office Assistant "Rex" and Rover appears in MS Greetings Workshop

See Microsoft Bob

Couple of screenshots...... and yep "Bob" will run quite happily under Windows XP....

Forr all it was maligned, it was at the time time a pretty radical departure from MS design phiosophy and some of the graphical and design concepts are actually still used in the softway industry today...

As a footnote.... MS Bob, while perhaps not the only mistake Microsoft has made, is one of the few products it has abandoned.....

but there is another one.... can you name it?????

Hint... it was another version of an operating system release.
