The male drinks plant sap (as aphids do), so I am assuming that it is a negative for our crops

For the caterpillar you can try a foliar spray of tobacco tea. Just take some tobacco, nothing you would particularly enjoy smoking or chewing, and mix it with water. After it has steeped and the water is a nice icky brown spray the leaves of the plants the caterpillars are working on. If you don't want to go this route, try some BT, Bacillus Theringella. The BT is harmless and can be sprayed onto the plants or mixed into the soil. BT attacks only caterpillars.

The only problem I know of with the tobacco tea is it might cause you fish to become addicted to cigarettes!

I am having a problem with white flyes. They are very tiny and leave white patches on the underside of the leaves. I'll send pictures when I am up and running again.

be careful with the tabbacco tea, i'm sure i've read somewhere that depending how much tabbaco you use and how long you let it steep the nicotine conents can approach quite dangerous levels even for skin contact. thimes that by 10 for kids.

I think there is only one type of lady bug that is not beneficial to the garden and that is the one with all the spots - it is called the 28 spotted LB (so start counting AM)

Pests and Diseases:

Important insect pests of zucchini are cucumber moth, grasshoppers, wireworm, pumpkin beetle, 28 spotted ladybug, myrids and thrips. Important diseases are powdery mildew, pythium, black rot and gummy stem blights, wilt, and blossom end rot.

the yellow and black lady bugs eat powdery mildew, so they are good to have about

how big was the "red spiky bug"?

AM, the creepy bugs are lady bird larvae as far as I can tell - that's what'll eat your aphids (if that's what they are :?: )
