Saw a great programme on the ABC today about eucalypts and the creatures that live in them, one of these being the koala. This is a little gross but oh-so-interesting - in order to start a colony of beneficial bacteria in the gut the young koala eats its mother's faeces :o (and yes, there was footage)

i reckon that puts a whole new light on peeing in the fish tank!

lol, yeah i learnt that recently from a show on abc last week, wonder if it was the same.....(did the baby get seperated from the mother by an advancing bull (male Koala)?

im still not too keen on peeing in my fishtank, because of my diet, (all the hormones and stuff in chickens, and synthetic chemicals in other junk)
Ap will make it soo much easier to eat healthy......

This is the same theory as rabbits, either poo or vomit is introduced to the young to get the bacteria going, :pottytrain5: :puke: DINNER IS SERVED

Here's a good one, this is the culture that is in Yakult...

L. casei Shirota
LcS was originally isolated and selected from the faeces of an infant. LcS grows well in commercially available media for LAB or in tomato juice. In milk, LcS grows well between 30°C and 37°C, but growth rate is slower than it is for other lactobacilli used for starter cultures. LcS has specific nutritional requirements for normal growth, requiring 12 amino acids, four vitamins, uracil and one of the purine bases. It produces lactic acid (final concentration of 1.3 per cent in milk) and small amounts of acetic acid, butyric acid and formic acids.

I was wondering what would get someone even thinking about that 'Hmmm, if I culture this lovely baby poo it might maka really healthy drink!'

Just goes to shoe though, nothing is spontaneously generated, everything comes from somewhere else, microflora in your gut, ammonia in your AP system...just helping the cycles along

I have helped a little inthe past to raise an orphan Red Kangaroo and a Western Grey Kangaroo.

Quite a learning experience firstly changing the formula as the Joey grows and then going out to find roo poo for the baby's bottle.

Both of those things are true, but amniotic fluid and breast milk are both sterile (ie free of bacteria) amd we need to get our gut flora from an external source too.

So thats why our kids are so healthy,
They washed most of the gravel on the block via mouth, unfortunately pre GBs so no gravel was collected.
No hermetically sealed, bug free, bleached sterile environ here.
Heaps of Aloe, rainwater, Dogs, chooks, pigs, ginea pigs, turkeys and trees to climb.
