Here in Aus ... most pets (where legal) are wild type... sourced from rivers where they have gone feral. Most stock are very inbred but seem to be generally very healthy.

I think we had a gold version once, but no reds, or pink varieties of mozambiques.

I am amazed at the ability of males to rapidly change colour ... black with red tails to silver when disturbed.

A beautiful robust fish!

Aquamad should be getting local rainbowfish from the creeks around Cairns. Unless the stream is protected, it is legal in Qld to collect rainbows from creeks :D

Rainbows will breed readily come summer, about November

Mc :rr: , you could increase your breeding capabilities with females from the wild - they are robust and disease resistant already... as soon as you chuck a few well coloured males they will soon bring out all the colours in the next generation of fish...

I already have about 25 to 30 eastern rainbows in a tank here... but they do better in deeper water. Council breeds them here and releases them into the local streams and we got some from council before the big release :)

Good thing you are all interstate/overseas =)

Well - if we ever end up breeding the same things, maybe we can do blood line swaps - or is that not needed so much in fish breeding?

yeah outcrossing is important, i havent bred/inbred enough generations to need that yet, but prob will eventually
The line i am currently working on, the males have a deep solid blue (some are a greener coppery blue) with red flowing tails. I got my breeder guppies from a couple of diff fish shops, so although majority of the drop are the colour morph im working on they dont breed true (got a pink and red spotted buppy, and a green snakeskin with red tail as drops, which i want to try and fix when i get more room)

Hmmm, who would transport live fish for us? i looked into Aus post a while ago, but they dont (or didn't back then)

tehre are even strict laws regading native rainbows, you're not meant to translocate so that the distinct genetic strains don't intermix. even when ordering from a supplier you should get the ones "correct" for the area.
