I've looked at a lot of hillsides recently and envisioned a terraced AP setup with a poly covering over it and a pool at the bottom. (south facing would be the best)




That would utilize land that is otherwise not agriculturally used -- certainly for greenhouse type operations. With the right pump, it could be incredibly efficient -- And whoever picked the vegetables would get very strong legs....

I thought about this also, as EB stated however, it takes a greater flow capacity than becomes feasable with a large system.

That's what I thought, but where I have a problem understanding the autsiphon, and likewise the point at which I abandoned my feeble attempt, was: what flow rate is required to kick start the siphon? Is it higher or lower than the siphons' outflow?

Solids are coming up off the bottom of my system fairly simply.. See pics below

So far as a name for this type of system.

It's a chift pist system...

Constant height in fish tank, pump in sump tank.. Comonly known as a a pist system.. :lol:

There are no real solids in the drain tank where the pump is Beeso, the solids are in the main tank..

The low flow of the smaller pump certainly doesn't help move solids of any sort, even when the water is pumping back into the fish tank, it doesn't move the water around much..

I use a drain like that in my duckweed tank

Hi Joel,

This looks like a cheap and easy system for a first up Ap'er.

The fish tank is 1000l, what volume is the growbed and sump? Are the ratios about right?

Can you tell me more about the pump?

The system has been running for 6 months now, how is the progress, does the water get enough aeration?

What changes would you make if you started again?

Must be about time for an updated growth picture ;-)

Hey Trensky,

Yeah, this system was ok, I've decomissioned it, due to having just too many systems to look after at the moment.. The drain tank was 500L, the growbed, I don't know how big it is, probably about 200L or less.

Are the ratios about right? Well that all depends on how many fish you put in there. :) They can always be right.

Does the water get enough aeration? Not really, I had an air pump going in there at the same time...

Changes? Larger growbed and larger drain tank... :D
