Hey Mc :rr: !
Yep, they are tropicals - sword tails, platties and guppies... they have bred, but as there is little place for the babies to hide the bigger fish have simply eaten them - one of the holiday projects is to add 'structure' to the wheelie bin where baby fish can hide from the adult fish so that he population can increase...
So, what are these ideas?

Apparently there is a "glut" in the Aquarium fish supply industry... so if thats true, then breeding and selling aquarium fish could be an interesting hobby.

Even so, Since guppies and some other types are good breeders, then I wonder how many guppies would you need for the same output as 1 barra?

And feed requirements again... do they need the same amount of feed?

If you take out the pregnant females and let them give birth in a fish tank... then you dont have to worry too much about them eating their young, and if they do.. well extra protein mwahahaha...

But imagine say 5 wheelie bin systems... each one has a different breed of fish... at the same time doing fish breeding instead of fish eating...

Then again if you were really desprate, you could fillet guppies...

and serve them with tooth picks ;)

Not a bad idea- I spoke to the local pet shop and they said that they will only purchase tropicals in lots of 111 :shock), so you would have to have loads of hidy holes etc for the babies to survive long enough not to become food :)

I take it the extra 11 covers their fish losses and they work on 100 surviving and being sold

McPhro - did you mean a glut, because that would indicate there is already too great a supply, which means that you would get bugger all for your product.

I meant that they cant get enough apparently. They cants even import enough... saying that... One guy told me the average life expectancy of an aquariaum fish is 6-7 weeks... So people buy more...

I dunno... Guppies are one thing. But your more exotic types like Tetras are harder to breed unless you know what you are doing. But once you get them to breed sucessfully...

Im thinking of just trying my hand at 1 or 2 species... get good at just 1 type etc...

Traditionally, novice aquarists become disillusioned at the frequently experienced high death rates of their aquatic pets after setting up a new aquarium. Statistically, as much as 60% of the fish sold for a new aquarium will die within the first 30 days. 2 out of every 3 new aquarists abandon the hobby within the first year.

From the nitrogen cycle doc ;)
