We could almost start a new section on greenhouses as there's been a fair few posts recently on them... I'm going to want to build one soon...

I've got that one in my favs already rope. Thing that put me off using it wasn't a shortage of PVC pipe it was the fact that it would be a little less strong than I would like and also the thing about PVC wrecking the greenhouse plastics.

Wish I hadn't bought the shit now. No idea what I am gonna do with it . It's pretty friggin grubby - was thinking of throwing in bottom of pool before I do the next superchlorination.

What's the PVC wrecking the greenhouse film about. I haven't heard of that before.... more info please.

Thanks for the link Roz...that's a nice simple, inexpensive way to get the beds indoors.

Some of the folks over here have used the PVC to make the hoops, the biggest problems with it seems to be it lacks ridgidity to stand up to snow and wind loads, over time it degrades due to UV exposure and becomes brittle. Of course there is some concern with off gasing when it is exposed to the sun, and this, along with some abrasion problems, might be what causes with the poly film.

Personally, I think if you just want a temporary structure you could use the PVC, just go with a large enough diameter to give you some strength or do like a few people have done and slide steel rebar inside the PVC. (Only thing is when you do that, and compare the cost of a piece of chainlink top rail or EMT with the cost of PVC pipe with rebar you will see little in the way of cost savings, other than the tools to bend the metal tubing.)

Great for cheap temporary shelter/shade but not really strong enough for a permanent structure of any useful size.
The max working temp of pvc tube is quite low.
Given the internal temps of a greenhouse in summer, the pvc would almost certainly soften and take a "set", resulting in the hoop losing most of it`s ability to bounce back against a load.
A greenhouse poly cover is more than capable of bending 3x3 timber when it contracts in cold weather, pvc tube wouldn`t stand much of a chance.

It is cheap and easy to find though

I was talking to someone the other day who said a really cheap and nasty greenhouse can be made using geomesh (The steel mesh used for reinforcing concrete) Just bend it over and cement the two sides into the ground. Then cover it in plastic.

Strong sturdy and the materials can be bought really cheap.

How big a mesh mesh can you get of reo?

Wouldn't the abrasion of the reo on the plastic wear holes in it pretty quickly?

vb - I'm using that pipe running the water back from my GBs no problem at all, also used it as pvc clips to hold down GH cover and the shadecloth - mind you, only used 2 lengths so far tho
