I've finally go the go ahead from hubby to use our courtyard for our aquaponics experiment. We have ordered the Book/DVD package but haven't heard back from Joel yet.

Anyway, here is a picture of our courtyard.

As you can see there is plenty of room. I am wondering about electricity and keeping everything waterproof. Should we get a small greenhouse to cover our system? Also, has anyone tried using solar panels to provide some of the power to the pumps?

There are some other threads on solar.
Try this
And This

For outdoor power get an electrician to install an outdoor power point. Other than that rain gets in your system when uncovered but this is not a big issue as long as you can direct overflow somewhere (gardenbed?). Greenhouse would give you higher temps which is good for growth, unless you want trout which won't like Sydney summer anyway.

And we drift from AP, to solar energy, to self-suffiency, to way off in the weeds on some topics.

Take a look at Steve and Ange's courtyard system. That may fit in with your situation. There are as many ways to do it as there are people here.
