Steve, I agree that if you bury it the smell would not be as bad to the human nose, the worms can get to it better, but what about animals. We have problems here with the animals digging up things that are buried.

My worm farm has a few bricks on the lid, would have to be a bi animal to gt it open, possums are a bit of a pain sometimes, but having a dog helps ;)

Ideally the worm farm will be going inside the greenhouse during the winter when it is set up too.

New tips in doing aquaponics, you also need worms, enough weight to keep the worms in and other things out, and a dog or two. Your right, Joels book also shows his dog in the pictures. :thumbright:

Really, I had not thought of all the extras that will go into the system.

Stu, i hear ya.

Did i tell you about the night that the dog was going nutz for ages. I cracked it and went outside to find the source (the dog was just being a dog) there was (what i thought was) a cat on the fence. i ran right up to it and hissed loudly. I figured something was a miss when i was face to face with it and i stood its ground. then i saw the claws and backed away slowly...........and threw rocks at it :)

I guess that making sure that ample vegetable matter be mixed with it would be useful. I personally would want to bury the smell of rotting meat!

Anyway, there are some instructions on how to convert an old wheelie bin here on the forum for those of you interested in worm farming. A bit of cow manure and they go crazy and general decomposition of grass clippings etc becomes very rapid. (aided by the bacteria in the dung no doubt!)

we gotta find steve a new avitar... a flaming caveman or something along those lines ;)

From time to time I throw shredded paper into my worm farms, mostly to cover rotting vegetable matter which might attract midg's

not sure how well that would work with a possum

I'm not a cat hater, but by the same token i don't have a huge amount of love for them. we had cats as kids, and i never got over the fact that they were your best friend when they were hungry or IF they Felt like it. I can still remember calling puss, he stopped walking, turned around and looked at me as if to say "whatever" and then continued walking away.
A dog is always your best friend :)
